Will YSP flip to rock if Free-NY does?

See the NY board. Daily News reports Free-FM NY may flip back to K-rock as early as today. Even Opie and Anthony might be done with there.
What would that mean for YSP? Does 104.5 make it less likely that YSP would go back to full-time rock? If it does go back to rock, who would be the morning show? Someone currently doing a talk show on YSP?
Would the market support (Adult) Alternative on 104.5 and Active Rock on 94.1? Daily News report says Dan Mason isn't fond of Free-FM-type formats.
Discuss.

Try to get the WFNY stream, Free FM/NYC is already dead!

I gotta say, what a great stunt! Only in New York.

From what I've read, Dan Mason is not a fan of "hot talk". One can surmise that Free FM Philly is just about cooked. Heck, they're pretty much shying away from the Free FM moniker. (94-one, WYSP, Talk that ROCKS! I wouldn't be surprised if they even stopped mentioning the "one" and brought back the "94WYSP" signature.)

When 104.5 suddenly flipped, some asked if CC knew something, and wanted to be first.

Now its looking like they knew the free FM format was on its way out.

Let's just say that Free-FM was on its way out once Dan Mason was in.

This will be interesting. Rock doesn't sell, rock doesn't sell...at least that's what those in "the know" have told us here over the past year or two.

And now we have The Trainwreck (MMR), The OGLish Chicken Rocker (We're Marketing God-awful Krap), and The All New & Improved Max-Alice Modern Chicken Rocker on 104.5.

And now is it possible that YSP will return to its roots and Philly will have a forth rocker? You mean to say that the "rock doesn't sell" rhetoric was all a lie?

Hmmm. I think that since Free FM died in NY, that it would die in Philly as well on the same day if CC hadn't flipped 104.5 last week. That said, I can't see the FREE FM thing hangin' around town. So maybe CBS is up to something.

New format anyone? Soft AC, Dance (maybe), Real Oldies, Standards? Those are the only non-rock oriented formats that I can see actually getting listeners on FM in Philly. (But I doubt that the latter two are possible, even though they are a guaranteed hit in the ratings)

Could it be that CBS is waking up to the fact that the consultants are full of S#%& and is plotting something new and exciting as we speak?

The only other thing I can think of happening would be for PHT to go to 94.1 and for 1210 to go Spanish. But I don't know about that one since it didn't do anything on FM, it probably wouldn't do anything on AM. (But since when has that stopped "the suits" from making improvements?) Skin Radio anyone?

Well, Free-FM did switch to K-Rock here in NYC, and in case any of you are keeping score, at 5:53 PM they are just NOW playing "Alive" from Pearl Jam - I know how much that is a rock anthem down there...

Rather than trying to compete with MMR or Radio 104.5, WYSP should try to be its own entity. Sure, there's bound to be some overlapping artists, but WYSP should do Active or Alternative the right way, without watering it down. They should play lots of Currents, some harder acts, and go easy on the old-time rock (if they're Active).

A good sound if they were to go Active would be like 93.5 The Beach, WZBH ( http://www.wzbhrocks.com ) in Delaware, which rocks hard and is an excellent antidote to the dinosaur rock and the bland safe rock out there. A good sound to emulate if they went Alternative would be sister station O Rock 105.9, WOCL ( http://www.orock1059.com ) in Orlando, which plays a pretty solid variety and isn't afraid to mix it up with harder acts. It could position itself as the rebirth to DRE or Y-100 and take on Radio 104.5 which seems to be positioning itself as more of an Adult Alternative / Modern AC thus far. Either of these options would certainly be more successful than the sinking ship known as Free FM.

Speaking of Orlando..104.5 (if they stay in Alt. mode) would do well to sample WTKS Real Radio 104.1's night-time music format (also on HD 24/7). Great variety of old & new alternative. Not afraid to go heavy or play something new.

I'd imagine 'YSP will simply go back to their former incarnation (Active). I'd say go all heavy-leaning new rock (no classic rock, no hair bands, limited Alt. recurrents). Be Philly's New Rock destination.

Real Radio's Alternative mix is terrific. When I was in Orlando a month ago, I listened to it a lot more than O-Rock at night because you never knew what you would hear next, and they kept the Mullet Rock to a minimum. I would listen more often, but I can't get the stream to work. Shockingly, Real Radio is owned by Clear Channel - who knew they were capable of something this good?

Why not bring Y100 back too while you are at it ;)
