Will Z-93 make a return someday?

Just thinking last week while reading a posting by kentuckymedia, who said that Mainline isn't in Dayton for the long haul...IF, and I say if, they sell 92.9 a year down the road, could the new owners bring CHR/Pop and Z-93 back to 92.9? Would it be a good move? Your two cents is requested now... ;D

Z is gone. Radio 1 will tweak 102.9 and it'll become a hip hop and hits station. The best we can hope for is Mix being sold by Clear Channel and them kind of morphing into what Z was, which was really an adult CHR, see Q102.

Mainline will stay in Dayton til they make at-least their 76 Million back, if not more. I see them being here for 5 years minimum with that kind of budget.

Fly is actually doing well, it was a well thought out, well researched and well programmed Adult Hits station. Some owner could come in and change it back because he wants to win the blue ribbon for the prettiest radio station in town, but his investors would sure hang him from the biggest building downtown if he even thought of that!

My best bets are...

WDKF/WDSJ are sold to a newcomer
WDSJ swaps frequencies with WOKL (50,000 WATTS - K-love would be happy)
Owner now has 94.5 and 96.9
Smooth Jazz moves to 94.5
A new Adult AC "Modern Mix" pops up on 96.9

Eh, but this is just my guess.

There's no real "brand loyalty" left for Z93. I will say in my heavily female dominated workplace I'm hearing some buzz about Fly, and am hearing it more and more. They're still doing lots of TV, all at the time Mix, and the rest of CC have marketing budgets frozen.

I thought that WOKL had a CP to move closer to Dayton and that might be a little closer of a signal. I can't see them keeping Greenville and no other signal; it;s really too far away. It would give coverage of Richmond and a huge swath of Western Ohio and Eastern Indiana...but they'd be giving up coverage in Dayton.

Wait so this will leave Dayton without a CHR? Where will Channel go if 94.5 becomes Smooth Jazz?

The channel will be turned off. CC only used it as a flanker ultimately anyway. Mix will probably leave some of the 80's behind and let Lite pickem up. They'll go 90's and now and that's the closest you'll get to a CHR.

The Fly is the best format this station has had since the 1980's. Hope it stays with it for awhile, at least. I think someone spent some time researching this attempt, and it's not the first station to use it.

Fly is a good station...Well thought out, cool imaging, good music, etc. Once I flip it on I could listen for hours and not realize how much time had passed. The only two faults I can find with Fly is that:
A. They play zero current or new music
B. They have no airstaff
Hiring someone to do at least morning drive and afternoon drive wouldn't hurt, and will probably be done by the end of the year(I remember reading that Liberty, Fly's sister station in Virginia, went jockless for almost two years-They only have a Morning guy to this day). On the new music front, yeah, I know that it's an Adult Hits station, but still they could sneak in a current artist or two(At least Sara Barielles or OneRepublic or Colbie Caillat) without going against the demo. Just my opinion. I guess the research shows differently... ::)

A station, assuming it had a reasonable signal, could pull a WNCI/Columbus on Mix 107-7 and, possibly, be successful. Of course, Mix could also bring itself into the 21st Century and also be that station, if it decided to be an Adult CHR.

But, generally speaking, these days in Dayton, CHR is a one-station format.

94-5, I expect, will continue until someone decides to flush it.

92.9 is gaining audience and acceptance. Z-93 is now history.

jason--were you ever on newstalk64 whlo in its original incarnation before mortensen bought it?? this would have been around the time nick anthony programmed and hosted late mornings and before merle polis came down from cleveland--david9396

I think Fly 92.9 is here to stay. I went to an eye doctor this weekend and the radio station playing was Fly 92.9. When I was there a year ago they played MIX 107.7. I found that very interesting that Fly 92.9 was on.

David:

Can't say I ever worked for WHLO - pretty much my Ohio experience has been limited to Columbus/Dayton/Cincinnati. I do know of its' heritage...and I certainly know of Nick Anthony.

Good to see that everyone has a high opinion of Fly 92.9. I remember when the flipped first happened, most everyone on this board(NOT including myself because i've liked it since the start)crapped on it. Fly is fun to listen to. Good to see someone put something worth listening to back on 92.9. It was painful to watch a heritage CHR like Z-93 struggling like it was.
I'm shocked that the WGTZ calls are still on 92.9. That is the only piece of Z left. I guess if one thought about it that the "WGT" part of the calls could stand for the brothers of flight, the Wright Bros., but I must be thinking too much.
It'll also be interesting to see these Trends, the first ones since Z was blown up for Fly. I believe the last ratings period ended on the last day of Z-93 and the stunting for Fly, Oct. 31st. I'm sure that Mix isn't so anxious to see those numbers, though. It wouldn't surprise me to see Fly in the mid to high 4s.
I've seen the commercial, now I wonder when the Fly billboards will start to pop up, especially with Spring driving season on the way. I can't wait! 8)

I finally gave the station a good listen. Programming seems appropriate (the 60s just don't fit, IMO), but my immediate and biggest question was regarding the audio: isn't the B1 bass a bit too much and out of phase??

Not sure how just the bass portion could be out of phase. If they did have something out of phase and any of their 60's material is mono, they will find out really fast. :)

At first I didn't like it...the countdown stunting was much too long...my wife (who detests oldies) wrote it off as "just another oldies/variety" station ala Mix 107.7...but I hear people at my workplace liking it too.

I'll have to tune in again and give a second opinon....any live jocks coming soon?
