Chuck has passed away in Pittsburgh at the age of 79. Here's the obit http://bit.ly/ISfc61
Worked with him while I was afternoon drive/asst. PD/PD at WPEZ and he was PD at WWSW. Nice guy and, apparently, a real radio vagabond. RIP, Chuck.

He was a nice guy. When we worked together at KQV he was the production director. He also did a weekend on-air shift and referred to himself as "Weird Beard". If I remember correctly, he came to KQV when Don Shafer left. And, I think when he went to 970 he was replaced by the guy who was arrested on morals charges. My memory is a bit foggy since that was about 45 years ago.

He wasn't at KQV very long, was he? I know he was Production in the summer of 67 but don't recall how long he was there before or after that.

My only reason for recalling summer of 67 is that it was his brainchild to put the whispered "Groovy QV" and "Super Summer" on the song carts. Some said that was a great idea, but maybe not so great. Summer ratings book was typically a good one for a teen-based station like that, but the Summer 67 book was a downer for them, fwiw.

> ... I think when he went to 970 ...

Wasn't that after KDKA? He replaced Thom Brown at KD in 1970 after a couple of years at KXYZ Houston, if memory serves correctly.

Weird Beard joined KQV in January 1966 and left for Houston in 1969. More details are on his page on my site.

Thanks, Jeff.

One minor correction to the information on your site: You say he was "program director at KDKA 1971 - 1972" but he actually started at KD during the first half of 1970, replacing Thom Brown who was transferred to Chicago sister station WIND.
