WILM Audio

Has anyone noticed how really bad the WILM audio is now? Distorted beyond belief. Since they are moving, I know there will be problems, but they sound so bad. I listened to Shawn on WABC and the audio was much better.

I listened today to Sean Hannity on WILM and tried WABC, and found WILM's signal to be far clearer with no static whereas WABC's signal was listenable for a radio geek, but regular listeners wouldn't tune in over WILM as it had a fair amount of static. The sound as processed from both WILM and WABC was the same, to my ear, so whatever problem you experienced earlier in the week apparently has been resolved.

Mike, the sound Friday, while better than Thursday, was still dull and distorted. When I wrote about listening to WABC, I was commenting on the audio processing, obviously not static, although where I was in New Castle, WABC was loud and clear with no static. Likewise, 1210 audio was far above WILM's.

I also checked the Baltimore affiliate Thursday and Friday. Again, much better audio than WILM. 1450 and 1150 had been nearly equal in audio quality. Now WILM sounds really bad on all satellite supplied audio.

I did notice that today when listening to Rush. WPHT, and WABC both did have a better sound quality than WILM. An electrical engineer I know, who used to be a radio engineer a number of years ago, thought possibly that WILM's new location next the New Castle Airport could be part of the problem as WILM is sending a microwave signal to their tower near Walnut St. He seemed to think there could be interference of some sort from the Airport or possibly the Delaware National Guard facility. He seemed to think that WILM might need a hard line from their studio to their tower to overcome that problem. He obviously hasn't seen WILM's facility so he's not speaking with any actual knowledge of their problem, but just was speculating what could cause such a problem.

That could be the issue, Mike. Also yesterday, there was severe clipping during Rush, creating a very annoying bleeping sound. Over modulation, distortion and now noises. There are still many issues to be worked out after the move.
