Wilmington: CBS moving from WILM-LD to WWAY 3.2

CBS will switch its affiliation in Wilmington, N.C. to Morris Network-owned WWAY, the broadcaster announced Wednesday.

The change is part of a broader agreement that extends the network’s affiliation with Morris-owned stations in Chattanooga, Tenn. and Columbus, Miss. CBS will end its affiliation in Wilmington with Capitol Broadcasting’s low-power station WILM.

The network will begin broadcasting on high-power WWAY Jan. 1. The channel is currently the ABC affiliate in the Wilmington market. In 2013, WWAY launched a digital subchannel affiliated with the CW, which is co-owned by CBS with Time Warner.

This means The CW will be relegated to SD in Wilmington, unless WILM makes a grab.

ABC, CBS and The CW will all be in HD on WWAY, while Cozi is being dumped.

When WWAY takes over as the local affiliate home for CBS programming Jan. 1, it will be dropping its broadcast of CoziTV, a retro programming station.

“Unfortunately, due to bandwidth restrictions and our commitment to broadcast ABC, CBS and The CW all in (high definition), we will not be able to continue to broadcast CoziTV effective January 1, 2017,” WWAY general manager Andy Combs said in a statement.

Future programming plans for WILM-TV, the current CBS affiliate, have not been made public.

From CircleSeven on TVNewsTalk:

Looking at the guides, WILM will be running a typical independent schedule.

Rachael Ray (9am), Dr. Phil (4pm), The Doctors (5pm), & The Big Bang Theory (7pm) are being kept in its original timeslots, with Phil getting an additional airing at 10pm.

Access Hollywood (6:30pm), Access Hollywood Live (11am), Crime Watch Daily (2pm) & the cancelled Celebrity Name Game (10am) will be added to the daytime schedule. AH is currently aired after Corden at 1:37am.

It looks like the station might be airing different shows on the 9pm hour. On Monday (1/2), it's Blue Bloods; on Tuesday (1/3) it's Leverage; and on Thursday (1/5), it's Pawn Stars & Forensic Files. Both latter shows will also be aired regularly on weekdays (Pawn at 3pm & Forensic at 11:35pm).

And simulcast of WRAL's news broadcast are being kept (and even expanded on the early shows; 5-9am, 12-1pm, 6-6:30pm, & 11-11:35pm).
