Wilmington Radio Memories

After reading the post on Mike Grohman, who worked at WGNI, i'm sure many of
you who post in the "Eastern North Carolina" section have memories of working
in the Wilmington radio market, i've been here for over 22 years and remember
many who have come and gone to other places or are no longer behind the mic,
or was on television, i would like to hear you stories, if you have any to share.

Speaking as someone not *IN* radio, I lived in Wilmington in 1999 (and 2000) when Hurricane Floyd visited us. My station of choice that morning for information as I did my best to bail out of town (or, row out of town ;) ) was WGNI and Craig and Kitty...who are still there, apparently, according to WGNI's website.

I was fortunate to be part of the original B100 (WVBS) when it switched to CHR in 1985. Best part of the gig was living in Carolina Beach RIGHT ON THE OCEAN! YEEEEAAAAAAAAH! :D

I got my radio start in Wilmington - WGNI/WAAV from 1964 to 1980! A bunch of formats, a whole bunch of great radio people, and lots of memories. Mike's passing made me long to work in Wilmington again!

I have been out of radio for almost three years, now, but still miss the fun part of it. After working for Clear Channel and CBS, I don't miss the corporate krap!

I think how much the Sarbanes/Oxley legislation (Business Ethics) changed radio - took away a lot of the fun and the perks - and really did nothing to put an end to corporate corruption and greed. Too bad!

I lived in Eastern NC for over 20 years and while never had the good fortune of working in Wilmington, I did work in Jacksonville, NC for a time. I went to school with Bart Brown, I think he worked at WGNI, and who good ever forget Glasgow Hicks? I remember rockin' to the old WHSL. Fun times!

I was in Wilmywood from 2000-04. That place will always be my second home. Some of the greatest people I've known, I worked with there... Tommy Gunn, Mud Kennedy, Stanley B, Bryan & Jim, (love him or hate him) Paul Knight, Amy Besterfeldt, Gregg Stepp, Mike Snyder, Missy Andrus. I worked for Sinclair and CBS (Norfolk & Pittsburgh) since then and yeah, I'll take the small market/small company any day and twice on Sunday.
