Wilmington Radio

Today is my first full day home after being in the hospital for a month. I had a bunch of time to listen to all types of radio. I am going to make some points about radio outside Wilmington, but given my title I will start here.

Before I was rushed up to Duke University I had a chance to walk the halls of one of our local radio companies. I asked the higher ups why the ratings were not showing up; they told me "we are not going to pay arbitron" why is this is it because we do not care about how our listeners feel in that I mean how do we know who is doing good and who is doing bad.

I ran across an old article from Sunny 104.5s sign on and in the article it said something like; we have the same playlist as Mix 101.5 in Raleigh I disagree. When I was being moved from Duke to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, I listened to Mix and they have far better imaging a much better playlist and their jocks do not ramble on and on that last one is why I have turned off Sunny. Don't get me wrong I am not a disgrunteled former jock; just a frustrated listener.

What on gods green earth is up with GNI what a shock no live morning show.....I don't know what to say; no live morning news dumb dumb dumb. GNI had a wide playlist for generations I listened for two weeks and literaly almost fainted when I realized how much they changed; can anybody give me some insight on what is going on and is there more trouble coming I know Cumulus is swinging the axe like crazy but this is nuts. Would I be making a far off call if Cumulus were to put 980 on 102.7 on day?

I eluded to 980 above and read somewhere but forgot the legitemate site that Cumulus is cutting coast to coast in some markets we are one of them and replacening it with red eye radio is this true and what is it? when does it start? is the wave going to ditch limbaugh for huckabee. This board has been very quiet I am just wondering what stations are making it and who won't; I have missed a bunch in a month

I can't automatically blame any stations for not paying Arbitron. If they know their listeners and are in touch with their listeners and their advertisers well enough, they don't need Arbitron to compare themselves to other stations. All they need to do is make money, and paying out money to Arbitron doesn't help that. Of course, not paying out money for a live morning show and occasional news updates doesn't help much either, but they're all paring back as far as they can these days.

Red Eye Radio's been on in Fayetteville (640 WFNC) for about a month now. So they're probably already on The WAAV too.

This market is no longer rated and I've heard as well from station managers as well that they don't want to pay Arbitron - the cost is huge. That being said, most will gauge their success by ad revenue. What's interesting is the other point of stations also needing to being in touch with their listeners - that seems to be falling to the wayside as on-air staff cuts are becoming increasingly common. It seems higher-ups are discounting this very important piece - live, local, celebrated DJs connecting with their audience - of the station success puzzle.
The recent backlash on the Bone's facebook page proves it. Davis Media layed off - they said because of "budget cuts" - one of 103.7's most popular DJs, Sherri in the drive-time slot. It's been over a week and angry listeners are still racing to post their comments before they're deleted by a page admin. The fact that they also let their new GM go makes you wonder who's running place and just how low they want their payroll to go.

I am glad 980 now carries abc news at the top of the hour; CNN sounded old and tired IMHO

I think WAAV should go back to 94.5 and I must say what I have been thinking for a long time. Our stations need to take a younger approach as radio is changing fast.

I think every station in town should do what 98.7 is doing that is talk for literally five seconds and then play the song. I have resorted to buying a wifi radio and hooking my iphone up to it so that I can hear anything I want to the reason is I am so tired of our jocks talking their heads off; Jammin; 99.9 is very bad about this. IMHO it is time after 13 years to go in a younger direction. I saw Jammin's ratings from the spring of 2009 by the spring of 2010 they lost half their audiance I can't post numbers but I am sure someone on here remembers what I am referring to. What should or could we do to make wilmington radio better. I almost forgot to post, if we get that new minor league baseball team and new stadium I would say count on WMFD going to FM that begs the question if wave and espn moved to FM what would become of our most powerful AMers?

Just throwing this out there :) in ten years I see a WECT FM if you are asking why I wrote this part of the post please feel free to jump over to www.radioinsight.com I was shocked because it is happening so fast.

It's been awhile since i wrote anything on this web page, but the previous post had some good points, one of the things i'm seeing is that more FM radio stations going to talk in many markets, Wilmington is no different since it has "The Big Talker FM", occupying two frequencies, 93.7 & 106.3, while WAAV only has 980 AM for now, recently, "Coast To Coast" moved to FM here, and since Cumulus Media Networks has not only "Red Eye Radio" but also "The Mike Huckabee Show", i'm sure Hometown Wilmington Media would like to acquire the rights to "The Rush Limbaugh Show" when the contract is up on WAAV, as well as "The Glenn Beck Program", if these talk shows were to head for FM in the Port City, WAAV might as well move to 94.5, where "The Hawk" is now, it may not compete well against "The Big Talker", but it would make for interesting radio listening; In addition, it might be time for "Sunrise Broadcasting" to tweak their stations, sell 630 AM, move WMFD to 104.5, switch "Sunny" to 107.5, and take "Z" and put it on 99.9, where many years ago "B-100" was, any other suggestions?, post them here...

As I type this ...much to my suprise and delight Jammin 99.9 is playing Hall and Oats You Lost That Lovin Feeling Their demo is not getting any younger and I think they are either tired of the morning show or desperate for listeners as they have suddenly added twice the music in the morning. I am guessing they will be a full blown classic hits station soon with very few ads and commercials just like modern rock is doing now by the way how is 98.7 hanging on with so little ads who will flip or tweak first 98.7 or 99.9 I am betting on the ladder as Brian White is voicetracking nights

Funny that the topic of Jammin' 99.9 was mentioned. I am streaming them right now and for a Jammin' oldies station they still sound good, but from the sounds of it they are not doing as well as they once did. Heck while still living down in SC Jammin' was a constant visitor to the NE part of SC with good band openings and for a JO station I really liked them alot as they played songs that most JO stations were not playing. CC1

I enjoy Jammin' 99.9 as well. It's a strong signal here in Myrtle Beach.

Thought I'd mention that WGNI's Windows Media stream has died, so I reckon they will be available via iHeartRadio soon...

@DukeFan: Not sure how long you've been laid up, and I hope you're feeling better, but CNN Radio News ended earlier this year; hourly newscasts have been replaced by NBC News Radio.

DToTheJ thank you for your kind words I am doing better; I have more energy then I have had in a while I just have a minor operation to get through next week. I am a recent convert from pop to country music. I have only had Double Q 101 on for a little bit. Do they have all dayparts and shows intact or did the Cumulus budget axe get them. I realize 99.9 was country for many years; I have been thinking, we have two ACs and three rock stations; if you count WHQR as classical they are doing battle with 95.9 and last but not least we have many christian stations and three talkers....what does everyone think of another country battle. I say put country on 98.7 it would reach the rural areas where country is king. 101.3 plays all sorts of country; make 98.7 a new country station as in new music from the past seven years or so. Those are my thoughts.

It doesn't seem like all that long ago 98.7 *was* a new country station!

Speaking of, in a very roundabout way, is Craig Thomas still working down there?

What about Todd (I can't remember his last name) who was at WBBS back in '77 and then I think went to WHSL?
