WGNI pulls back ahead to lead the market once again. The 800 lbs. gorilla just won't quit.

What in the HELL happened to WRQR? Matt Carter is really driving that station into the ground. Terrible hire by NextMedia, in my opinion. That station is so sad to listen to, compared to where it was when John Stevens and Christine Martinez were programming it, mainly John Stevens.

Speaking of Stevens, WWQQ took a bit of a hit but still ranks as #3 in the market. That man is a programming genius. I've said it before and I'll say it again...wherever he goes, he wins.

How about the Big Talker overtaking WAAV? That has to be messing with Mike Farrow and Perry Stone's head, right? Who'd have thunk it? Bottom line - they need to find a replacement for Harvard Jennings. He's a nice guy, but his day in the sun should've been over a LONG time ago.

"Dutch" on The Bone kicked a$$ Men 25-54, and P18-34. DUTCH ROCKS!

*I'm not Dutch

There is a lot to be said for heritage calls, and sticking with a product over the long haul. WGNI has been a consistent leader in the market for years. The AM days were strong and the move to FM came at the right time!

GNI has always been up and down in ratings but has always been up there. QQ
is the only game in town along with Coast.

WOW did RQR take a dump. I think the lose of John Boy and Billy, NextMedia putting on a lame morning show to replace them and bringing in some guy that has no clue about classic rock is what has hurt them.

As far as the Bone, they have a bigger classic rock library than RQR and atleast play some music in the morning and nights, Dutch is full of himself and likes to hear himself talk, but a good over all classic rock station.

I don't listen to talk radio so never mind. Are any stations in Wilmington locally owned anymore? Seems like corporate radio has screwed the pooch in Wilmington too.

I am not surprised by the ratings drop for WRQR. Losing John Boy & Billy was a hugh loss for Rock 104.5 as well as putting on the 2 Guys Named Chris to replace them. The only interesting portion of their show is the trivia around 9AM,other than this segment the show is full of fluff and no real entertainment value. If I wanted to listen to people talk for 4 hours I'll go AM and talk radio!!The next big problem is with Matt Carter shrinking the playlist and not playing what the listener wants to hear!! During one of his shows I heard a listener request a song and Carter shot down the request because he didn't like the song and then played the song he wanted to hear. Then he played the conversation on the radio. This must have made the listener feel worthless and turned them off enough to change the dial and tell all their friends not to listen. If that was me I would have called the station general manager and spoke my mind as well as never tuned back in to Carter's drive time show. I have once heard Matt claim that it was his station and he will play what he wants when he wants, and this is the attitude that will damage this station beyond repair and is the main reason for the loss of their base listeners. Matt needs to remember it's the listeners that drives his business and that the station belongs to them and should be geared to meet their needs and likes not his!! The guy has no personality what so ever and people can read this both on air and at live remotes. Last I new the job was entitled radio personality (or talent) for on air and live remotes and Matt does not have either of these qualities. At the few live remotes that I have been at while Carter was there he sat in the corner and did not get involved with the listeners who took time out of the schedules to attend them. He was the loner stuck in the corner. Who wants to attend a remote with no involvement by the participants running the show, and that also makes them listen to the competion. The next big mistake is the Free Beer & Hotwings show, again this is not what the listener wants!! Play some music, THE RIGHT MUSIC,and they will listen. The only shining star is the mid-days with JT. Even though his ratings dropped for this book(and who's wouldn't following the 2 Guys named Chris show). He has the personality to make people listen and makes it fun to tune in. When he is on the air it feels like he is talking to the listener one on one and this is the only saving grace for RQR. When he is out at remotes he makes everone feel like family and gets involved with all the listeners as well as non-listeners. This is the talent that will save the station from utter disaster and bring in the new listeners that will shop at the businesses that pay for the air time. After all it's all about the almighty dollar and this man knows the mission and lives it everyday. I say dump all the new crap that is not working including Matt Carter and get back to the days of the old ROCK 104.5 and play the music we all want to hear. Matt does not know classic rock or it's listeners and this shows by his playlist or lack of playlist, and his rejection of the requests by his listeners. You want Rock to be on top again, follow my advice, your bottom line will thank you!! ROCK ON 104.5 I know you can come back even stronger than the days of old.
ROCK ON!! RADIOCULT

Couldn't have said it any better myself, radiocult. I've thought for years that the Bone's library was much more advanced than RQR's. Sure, we like our Freebird from time to time, but we'd also like some Sgt. Pepper from time to time too. I don't know if RQR has EVER played that song.

The old Rock 104.5 is what we need. Bring back JB&B (ain't gonna happen), bring back some personality, bring all of that back. What you say about J.T. is the absolute truth. This guy, when out at remotes, is just another guy. He's easily one of the most approachable radio personalities I've ever come across at a live event. Hell, he's actually friends with a few of the listeners...relationships that started as that - DJ-Listener. Now he's cultivated friendships from that! The same will probably NEVER be said for Matt Carter.

As for the night time show...yeah...it's pretty damn terrible. A decent idea in theory, but all people really want to do is hear some good rock at night, not a morning show not good enough to be in a morning time slot.

Do I expect NextMedia to do anything about it? Probably not. They keep people on payroll over there because they are cheap, not because they do a good job. Want to have a job for life? Go work for NextMedia at 25K a year. They'll never get rid of you.

Hmmm... Chris x 2 usually trounces JB&B in Greensboro with Rock 92 & The Buzzard. Maybe it's because Rock 92 is their flagship

Just because 2GNC does well against JB&B in one market does not mean they are well accepted anywhere else in the radio world. I'm sure there are people out there with no taste or like the music after the show and just leave them on for the content after they leave the air waves. Hell I listen to them just waiting for the mid-day show!! If I change the dial not to listen to them, I often forget to change back at 10AM to listen to the music, and WILL FM plays all day. So most days I take it up the rear and listen to them and just wait for JT to start his show, but when that wimp Carter comes on it's back to WILL FM or something(ANYTHING) else than Carter. As long as he is on the air and choosing the music content he is the lead weight around the legs of RQR sinking it to the bottom ocean!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a way to DIE!! Keep up the awesome job Carter and you'll do the job of killing a great station and hurting everone around you by costing them their jobs!!!! Who can sell the air time on a station that no one will listen to due to a PD who does not listen to the comments of his team mates and listeners. Oh yea you've got to be a team player to have team mates. Remember Carter there is no "I" in TEAM but for you there is only the "I" in WIN and you'll take credit for all the hard work put in by everyone else. [EDIT]

JT here,

I've had the privilege to work for Rock 104.5 for 8 plus years now here in Wilmington. Thanks to Chuck Sullivan and Carl Venters (Ocean Broadcasting) for giving me the chance to continue doing what I love to do. Rock and have fun.

One of the big payoffs of working in radio is meeting and making new friends. It is my sincere hope that I bring something positve and a smile to the people that do listen.

Things have changed since NextMedia took over. I can only try my best every day to do the job I am asked to do with what is available to me. I don't make decisions about music, imaging or most other content on the station. Would I change some things? Yes.

Rock 104.5s Program Director is Matt Carter, he answers to our GM, Operations Manager and Corporate Director of Programming.

I'm here for ya! [email protected]

JT is one of the hardest working guys in radio. Much love to a true radio maven. Have no fear...Rock 104.5 will return. All the doom and gloom..always from those who love to stire the pot and enjoy a kiss from Arbitron, but never have a reply when their book goes sour. (Which it will once plans take flight..)

Hmmmm.....JT...much love to ya! See ya back at your rightful share next book :)

Nice post, JT. Just be careful. I wouldn't be surprised if your immediate supervisor checks these forums, and since he's been apt to do things to WRQR to help kill it, he may be inclined to do so again with regards to your future employment. Tread lightly, my man!

You know it's funny, I went to Arbitron to check on prior ratings and then to this site to check on prior postings for RQR and the book before Carter was @ 7.2 then Carter shows up and the loss of JB&B(not Carters Fault) the book dropped into the 5 range, then down in the 3 range and now to a 2. What makes me laugh is the prior postings By Matt & voicetracker boasting the great job they are doing and how Nextmedia is the cats meow, but now that they are in the toilet they haven't posted any responses to the negitive book for the spring. How is this so? I guess they are looking for a patsy to throw all the blame on.Be a man Carter and admitt your mistakes and correct them.Learn from them and turn a negitive into a positive. All I know is that as long as you keep driving the station into the ground I will limit my listening habbits to the times I wish to listen, instead of all day and make sure that advertising dollars go where they will get the most value--QQ/GNI ect. If you stay at the bottom I'm sure many more clients will drop off your air waves!!

Well, rumor has it you're getting one of our DJ's down there to help bring up the ratings & turn the station around. Former wncd 93.3 DJ, Tina, is either a new DJ for the station or the new program director. I can't tell you the whole deal, since I don't know much myself. But I do know she left Y-town for Rock 104.5 down there. You'll have to see what happens over the next few months. I'll check back later for you insights/results on how the station is doing with the new change. :)
