WIMZ DOES IT A - Z

WIMZ has done something rather intersting. They began last Thursday afternoon playing their entire music library, every song they have, from A to Z. Here, a week later, they're just now getting to the "S". They keep saying this is a sign of things to come in 2006. I know one thing, the variety of the music they've been playing is terrific. Now, the question is, since they have all these great songs in their library - enough to go a whole week without repeating themselves, then why the heck don't they add some of that stuff into their regular daily playlists! They kicked the whole thing off with The Beatles "A Day In The Life." Does anyone know if another Knoxville station has ever done this before?

WIMZ did the "A to Z" thing five or six years ago, which is the only other time that I'm aware of it being done in Knoxville. It is a staple on the Classic Rock stations in other markets, such as Nashville, Atlanta, Memphis, etc, with 105.9 The Rock in Nashville doing it at least once a year. The problem I have with it is they keep saying they are going to play their entire library A to Z, but 35 to 40% of the songs they play will not be heard again until the next time they do "Classic Rock A to Z". Of the 60 to 65% of the remaining songs that are played for the A to Z stunt, at least a quarter will only be played occassionally or when someone request it, like on a "All Request Lunch" show. If WIMZ does it like it is done in most markets, you had better enjoy it because at least half the songs won't be in their regular rotation.

That sentence right there is KEY. See, last Wednesday (Dec 14th) was the end of the Fall Book. The next ratings period doesn't begin until January 5th. So they're giving you a treat during a time when they think it can't hurt them to play songs that they have no intention of playing "when it counts".

Enjoy it while it lasts.

I listened to it while working with some friends the last couple of days. If they played some of that stuff most of the time, then they would have me as a listener.

Yeah, when this is finished, they'll fall back into the old rut of playing the same ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Skynyrd, and Def Leppard songs over and over and over again. I'd say during the past week they've probably had more listeners than they've had in a while. If they want to make it much longer with that format, they need to throw in some of those "lost" songs they've been playing this past week. That is alot of incredible music that you just don't hear anywhere else on the radio. I think if WIMZ would half try, they could slip into the #3 spot in the ratings easily if they'd play more of this stuff. They've got more Beatles songs than Oldies had. They could bring in some of those lost oldies listeners with some of the older stuff. If WIMZ's the only place on the radio they can hear their favorite song, and if WIMZ played it once a day, then there's a good chance some of the listeners might stick around. If they don't freshen themselves up a little, with all the new stuff coming in radio, then they'll find themselves rock bottom in a year or two.

IMZ Has done this several times in the past. I have been out of Knoxville for 10 years and I remember Phil and Billy playing Iron Butterfly "All 17 minutes of it!" during morning drive. Block party weekends were my favorite. I pulled out one of my old cassettes from way back when and listened to Commanader Dave on a block party weekend. They played a block of Huey Lewis with "Heart Of R&R", "Hip To Be Square" and "Bad Is Bad". Huey on IMZ, ha! But back then I guess he was considered pop rock, which IMZ was playing a lot of back then.

On very very rare occasions, like once a year during the request lunch or something like that, WIMZ still plays "Hear of Rock N Roll" but that's it - only by request. They still do block party weekends once or twice a month but it's always blocks of the same artists over and over again. Aerosmith and The Stones are both awesome groups, but blocks of them over and over every hour get old after a while.

What they should try - "A Lost Classic & Block Party Weekend". That way they could play a couple of well known Rush or Yes tunes and stick a "lost classic" in the middle. That would give new life to the same old block party weekend.

Just curious, does IMZ still play "Holy Water" on a regular basis? I know last time I was in Knoxville I heard it. Great song but no one else in the country plays it.
Edited by radioguy2000 on 12/30/05 04:48 PM.

That would be a great idea. Back when WOKI was Eagle100 they would do a "perfect album side" weekend where they would take a block and let the listeners call in and decide what 6 songs would make up one perfect album side for that particular band. It was great but no one has done it since. As far as classic rock went, WOKI really knew how to program that format. They kept it fresh by pulling out lost classics all the time. Too bad their numbers were never any good.

Yeah, WIMZ still plays that song, wears it out actually.

Thanks for the "props!" Actually the numbers (contrary to popular belief on this site) weren't terrible for WOKI as Eagle 100. We were usually 5th or 6th 25-54 and 3rd with men. The exceptions were two really atrocious books, one where a consultant talked ownership into trying a "proto-Jack" format called "Rock Hits of the 80's, 90's and 70's." (Other companies tanked with it too in some really big markets like Detroit and Philly, so we didn't feel too bad, just went back to Classic Hits-leaning Rock.) The other one was the Bone's monstrous debut book. At that point DBC decided, wisely, that K-town was not going to support 3 Classic Rock stations and went to the River format. But we had a great time as the Eagle!

If The Bone had never happened, do you think Eagle100 would have hung in there and went after WIMZ? I don't see how The Bone lasted as long as it did. They might have made it longer if they would have spent more time concentrating on their music instead of talking about how much better they were than WIMZ. I really missed The Eagle when it changed to The River. After being spoiled by The Eagle, it almost made me sick to hear WIMZ compared to The Eagle. But WIMZ beat The Bone as far as variety went. The Eagle was top notch when it came to classic rock though. The DJ's were great - Ripley's All Request Night Flight was just awesome. She was always playing lost rock jewels that the other guys were afraid to play. I doubt if Knoxville will ever see another classic rock station like that.
