WIMZ VS JACK

I found this kinda humerous. We all know that Jack and WIMZ are owned by the same people (South Central.) Now get this. Yesterday (Thursday) WIMZ kicked off their first "All Request Thursday" and this is supposed to be a weekly thing like thier twofer Tuesdays. Anyway, yesterday they began running ads for their all request Thursday saying "Some stations in town play what they want. We play what you want." And then last night Phyllis West was talking about how stupid the other station was that said they play what they want. She said that whole idea was so stupid. That's interesting, a company creating competition between two of it's stations. Just a personal opinion here - I think South Central will see Jack totally flop before summer. I tried to give the station time to improve but they sound worse as far as the music goes, then the did when they first went on. 98.7 Earl FM however sounds fantastic. The variety they offer is incredible. I look for Earl to do very well.

The local people at SS are not exactly pleased with having to do Jack. They were forced to do it by their corporate office after seeing it go #1 in it's first book in Nashville.

The local people were told they would get to program it, but then corporate stuck them with the ABC satelite feed instead.

Add to that that Oldies was trending up at the time of the flip and it sold more remotes during the summer than X, IMZ and B combined, and you can see why the local people aren't exactly behind it.

There is some truth to your guesswork, but your line about remotes is laughable. Oldies had fewer remotes this summer than any of the other three stations individually, much less combined. In fact both the X and IMZ average more remotes per week than Oldies usually did in a month.

Oldies was doing OK, but it was never gonna grow the way corporate America demands growth.

Jack will be overhauled by spring and still tank.

That's what I was told by somebody who works over there, don't know if they were talking dollars or what. If it's incorrect, my apologies, that's just the information that I was given.

While true, I don't believe that Jack ever will either. With the situation they are/were in, the wisest move financially would probably have been sticking with it, especially given recent articles in Advertising News and other publications suggesting that the middle age and senior market is a booming area for advertisers right now. Maybe that's not true locally, but nationwide it is a developing trend in all forms of advertising.

I agree about sticking with Oldies. Not only are the baby boomers spending more money than ever, but oldies has alot of younger listeners also. Those old songs are new to them, are catchy, and alot of them have really held up well over the years. Take The Beatles for instance. They broke up in 1970 and are just as popular today as they were back then

You all are right about Jack failing. I give it a year and South Central will see what a failure it was. But it will be interesting to see what South Central does then. Earl will probably be around for a while though and probably do good in the numbers. That station is more fun to listen too and has more of a local feel. From the way it sounds, Citadel is having alot of fun with 98.7 right now.

The theory behind Jack is an interesting one: give your listeners a wide variety, and they will come. Play a little bit of everything, but not a lot of it all. I guess the reason Jack came into existence was because some schmo was going through a mid-life crisis and said, "Hey, I can listen to Collective Soul AND Creedence Clearwater Revival. Then people will think I'm cool." The problem is not everyone likes Collective Soul _and_ Creedence. I listen, and I only like 2/3 of what I'm hearing (if that).

AND...I miss DJ's. I miss the interaction. I miss knowing there's someone on the other end. I miss being able to call in during a morning show. I miss the occasional contest (of course). Most importantly, I miss the illusion that the radio station cares about its listeners. Yeah, I know most stations don't, but damn some of them do a great job PRETENDING.

Oh, well.
