WIMZ?

Seems WIMZ has lost a good amount of share in the last year, from 8's to now mid-5's 12+. Thoughts on why? Anyone think a Class A could swoop in right now and force them down further and even, *gasp* out? To sink that much without a direct classic rock competitor seems strange to me. What are your theories as to what is going on with them?

Perhaps the listeners accidentally marked the wrong thing in their little journal. Terrestrial radio does base its ratings off a very accurate system you know.

Could be as simple as diary placement. But if you look at the South Central signals as a whole you'll notice they're not where they used to be and nowhere near where the should be. I think it's time for a revamping of their entire programming department company wide.

Someone needs to launch an active hits chr similar to wnou in Indianapolis, or even a dance station with some 80s and 90s rhythmic oldies mixed in. Atlanta has one now.

The WIMZ playlist is too narrow and boring. Either they need to dig deeper into '60s & '70s classic rock or move forward into '90s grunge. This steady diet of '80s hair bands and redneck rock is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

+1.

Classic Rock is fun to listen to in other cities. It's tedious in Knoxville.

I tried to listen to wimz and star last time I was down that way, it bored me to tears so I flipped over to electric 94.9 and the new 106.1 the river. Knoxville radio has been so boring ever since woki 100.3 went talk. When WOKI was Eagle 100 it was way better than wimz.

I deleted WIMZ from my car radios some time ago. I just could not take the John Boy and Billy self induced laughter any longer. The limited playlist and the constant reminder "John Boy and Billy all morning and solid blocks of classic rock all day" finally got to me. WEGR Rock 103 in Memphis, once a great album rocker, has sadly fallen into the same mindless playlist. Back in the 80's they were great, playing local Memphis artists as well as a great variety of national artists. How the mighty have fallen!

Who died and left Aerosmith and 80's ZZ Top in charge of rock playlists anyway?

I have Sirius XM in my new car and when I'm in it the locals are out of luck except for WFIV 105.3. They just need to up their wattage; their music is great. The only other locals I listen to are News Talk 100, the oldies on 98.1, and Jack FM.

I live in Indiana now, but I come through knox on the way to my girlfriends house, and I pretty much just listen to Electric 94.9 from about corbin KY almost all the way to hillsville va before Star country 94.9 roanoke va stomps it out...

WIMZ hasn't been on my presets since the early 90's. I don't even scan by there and think "let's see what's playing". It's either John Boy & Billy or the same 20 songs the station played in 1988. I really don't see how they carry the rating numbers they have over the last 10+ years.

As far as JB & B go, I just can't understand how so many people think they're funny. They may have been funny years back, but they're just horrible now. And, it seems that almost every classic rock outlet in the south choose to carry them... Knoxville, Chattanooga, Tri-Cities, Nashville, Roanoke, Charlotte (their flagship - I see that one), etc.

To sum it all up, WIMZ is a complete waste of a great 100kw signal!!!

Ironically, better radio is found on the lower powered signals -- WJRV 106.1, WFIV 105.3, WUTK 90.3, WDVX 89.9, WOKI 98.7 & WPFT 106.3 (before it went to be a lame ESPN satellite).

...and my favorite, 91.1 WKCS.

Wow for years you guys have bashed WIMZ Yet Nobody has taken them on lately NOR has anyone beat them. Why does Nobody take them on if they are sooooooooo bad

Meant to say the oldies on 98.7, not 98.1. By the way, I occasionally will listen to AM 1040, but other than that all my AM presets are on out of town stations - WSM 650 Nashville, WLW 700 Cincinnati, WSB 750 Atlanta, WBBM 780 Chicago, and WCBS 880 New York. Nighttime listening, of course.

Who is going to take them on who isn't already beating them with another format? Citadel is sitting atop the ratings with WIVK and above them with WNOX, Journal is above them with CHR and whatever you call "HOT".

There is no reason for one of these companies to devote any energy to toppling the format. They're already performing better without having to compete.

The saddest thing is that South Central could own the #2, 3 and 4 positions in the ratings if they would just find someone who knew the market to program the signals. Think of the income that would generate.

Agree or not WIMZ hasn't been great since the days of Phil Williams and Commander Dave. John Boy and Billy have brought WQUT down in the hole with

their mindless, redneck and racial slanting or whatever words I can come up with. It was cute for a while, but things get stale . Some listeners are finding oldies stations as a remedy but that will get old too. Coporate boneheads have already thrown classic country out to the hogs and oldies will be the next.

I guess what we consider music since the british invasion is running it's course. God forbid the crap that comes off of American Idol as the next "good idea".
Film at eleven.

Thats why knox needs a dance station, or something hotter than star, but less urban than hot,,,, is hot even an urban station... A modern day version of Tnz or woki may work again,,,,,, its just cant be the same playlist as then, cause it needs to target 12 plus and 18-34...... Star and hot are just not as good as woki and star. we need some good talent and some good sweepers, music, prizes,, and a flame thrower signal wouldnt hurt either...... Wimz wont change, neither will the current 100.3, but we need to petition other stations,,, Knox needs a local chr like WnOU Indianapolis, or 96.5 The mountain in chat town.......

No way. They ignore most of the urban hits and can't even say the words "hip hop" or "rap" on the air. Hot is rhythmic CHR. What we need here is a real urban station. Yeah I know, it will never happen.

There really is no answer to "beating" WIMZ (by the way, their ERP is actually 79,000 watts, but the FCC lets them send 100,000 directly at the horizon with an electric beam tilt of the antenna)...

People will listen to them, because they have always listened to them. I agree with all the posts, especially the ones about John Boy and Billy laugh at each other (just time out the amount of space when they start laughing, and add it up at the end of their "show"... think of all the time they could spend playing something different than the Van Sants, the AC-DC's, the Stones, and all that other stuff that has long since outlived its airplay)...

The only thing we can hope for, is that advertising continues to sink, stations stay unprofitable, and they are forced to sell them to somebody more interested in making a buck. Good luck with that one.

My guess would be South Central is not going to do anything about WIMZ unless everybody stops listening to it.

The little Classic Rock/Classic Hits The Hog WIHG in Crossville is even playing deeper than WIMZ. In their market they are beating the heritage Country station and it's sister AC station! The AC station was forced to pump up their playlist a bit more because of it. You can sometimes catch a rock song on it now which is weird to hear a typical AC cut then hear Black Betty by Ram Jam or Boston.

The Hog is MUCH better than WIMZ, except when they slip in not-so-classic hits from Daughtry or Nickelback (anything you can do to stop that? haha) Great to hear you back on the air over there too. I heard 105.7 just got sold. I hope the classic hits format stays though.
