WIN-U Radio 880 AM

In a previous thread, I posted of my start in radio at WCPA/WQYX. Those foundations and intrigue encouraged me to seek out another position in radio, shortly after joining the US Air Force. While stationed out at Scott AFB, IL, I used the yellow pages to search for any open board-op positions at nearby radio stations. A small, AM only station happened to be looking in Highland, IL called WINU 880 AM.

After a few questions, I became the afternoon and evening board-op and began working well with the GM and owner Jack Chor. The original schedule sadly had no structure, bouncing from one program to the next. After a few months, I gambled with my minimum wage job and created a uniform, hourly schedule to which was a welcomed change for the GM. This afforded me more trust in the production work while allowing me to begin opening the mic, and producing a couple shows.

My career there was brief as the new owners swooped in shortly after the FCC deregulation in 1996. Their way of business was not something I was fond of, thus I ended up resigning. It has changed hands, owners, frequencies, call letters, and is now...as I know it...a part of a 5 cluster license sale.

Does anyone here remember WINU? Appreciate any input!

Daytimer 1510 started with the WINU call letters, but they were moved to 880 after 1510 was sold to Romanick who changed it to WXOZ, later WQQW and after a while (and his acquiring of 1430/1190) he let it go silent.

After the FCC took it away the 4 AMs he owned, they were put into the most recent "bid" for dials and no one bought them...likely gonna see 1510 vanish forever, along with 1460. I still have hope for 1430 and 1190, they were big signals for the Lou.

As far as the call letters, 880 also dropped them....they seemed to have vanished on the AM side, and reside on an FM 104.9 in another state for now.

I remember reading some of this in hit or miss articles as well as WINU being taken by another entity. I have no capitol but would have liked to have renewed/refreshed the Highland, IL station, bringing it back on the air. I know people are able to run stations out of state, but I'd need a sales staff, etc there to keep the station financially afloat.
