Winchester's 610

Are those day and night powers verified? At last check they had temporary non directional authority with no directional towers built for the night time service - the old ones are GONE!
610 AM Winchester, VA has resumed broadcasting from its new site as a full service radio station. New studios are at 2047 Valley Avenue, Winchester, VA 22601 Phone 540-409-5220 Web site is under construction at www.wxva.com. New call is WXVA. General Manager is Liz Martin.

WXVA is currently operating under a Special Temporary Authority to operate at 125 watts non-directional day and night, using what will be their new daytime antenna (writeup here (fcc.gov) and coverage here (fcc.gov).) This is one-fourth of the still-licensed 500 watt power (standard practice for STAs) DA-2 operation that went silent. Still outstanding is the construction permit (here (fcc.gov)) that requests 390 watts non-directional from this new site daytime and the ORIGINAL 500 watts directional nighttime service. WXVA may begin to use the full day power under program test authority at some point in the future (maybe even now?) prior to applying for a licens e to cover. So, the path back for WXVA looks like this: 125 watts ND-U, 390 watts day/ 125 watts night ND-U, 390 watts day / 500 watts night DA-N. // Now, for minimum power, the answer has been 250 watts (the minimum for Class B and C stations) for many years. The real key for the last round of new station proposals was finding a way to propose at least 250 watts at night and both cover the community of license and not generate any noticeable additional interference to other Class B and A stations.

Well the station has updated their website and is streaming live.

Their eclectic music mix features mostly pop-hits from about the 1950s to the '90s with some country and classic AOR tracks thrown in.

Very interesting station. I give them alot of credit for trying this. Many small communities need a station that serves the community this way. News is solid. The talk show is pretty good. The music mix is very strange. This station will have to survive on local direct advertising as it won't be a factor in the ratings. $20 a spot? Can't be much more than that.

So some consulting engineer and his wife from up in New Jersey has bought the old WHPL-WTFX-WNTW-WLVE (et cetera)--you know, AM 610, for the whopping price of $5,000 (five thousand dollars) and is looking for a Station Manager-Morning Jock-Sales Person--presumably one with a magic wand up his ass--to turn Super Six-Ten into a ratings & financial success.

Interestingly, they've slapped the old Charles Town WXVA calls on the thing and reduced daytime power so it can run non-DA, sunrise-sunset.

The app states no change to the 4-tower night rig, though. What gives? I thought CC was selling the land to some developer--the purported rationale for bagging 610 in the first place (aside from lack of any billing). Never was anything wrong with the signal, IIRC.

Actually, it kinda sounds like fun, don'tcha think? Building a "new" radio station from scratch? Making that dog bark?

What would you do with a fulltime AM on 610 that would actually work in the Winchester market?
The station's website wxva.com says the station "will feature everything new, bright and exciting in the Valley with an eclectic mix of music, features and news" If I was them I would offer something that no other station in that area offered.

As far as special features are concerned, I would offer play-by-play sports features of local high schools and maybe even colleges in that area. If the station is indeed going to play music, I say maybe sub-let the time to various DJs who wish to feature whatever music they wanted to offer. If the station is going to stick one specific genre, I'd go with one of the following: classic country, MOR/nostalgia or maybe a smooth AC not unlike "Timeless Cool".

Musically this station is a mess. I applaud them however in their effort to be community oriented and support community events. I would suggest more spoken word programming and less music.
