WIND 560 "Chirp" Artifacts

WIND seems to have a "chirping" sound to go along with program audio.

I suppose this is an artifact of some new "improvement" to AM radio, but I thought IBOC's artifact is a hiss.

Can anyone educate me as to just what I'm hearing?

Bill,

Tell me about the "chirping"...I don't hear it on any of the radios I listen to. Maybe it was something you heard last week duringt the 8A-10A hours? I'd appreciate more detail.

Thanks

Salem dumped HD Radio when they acquired WIND.

I've heard satellite receivers do that. It could also be their microwave STL. A few years back when WXRD Crown Point was running a classic country format, that would occur every 20 seconds or so, and lasted for months!

Does the sound occur during local news/weather, or only during the network feed?

Dave,

How do you get such a great signal out of that station? I want to feed the same vitamins to my transmitter!

Yes, that's it. It's the super-secret Salem classified audio processing that does it all. All knobs go to 11, which is much better than the standard 10 that all those "puny" stations use... (hi dave!)

Some years ago, I heard a story that may or may not be urban legend. Back in the good ole days, WCFL and WLS were the top Chicago stations and competing fiercely with each other. Jim Loupas, the chief engineer for WCFL, had an airchain put together that was having WLS for lunch.

Someone asked Jim what equipment he was using. According to the story, his reply was, "I can't tell you that, but I will tell you that it's only set on 2."

Would the "chirps" you refer to be anything
like the "chirping bird" noises I heard
from time to time--usually late at night--
on KFI Los Angeles circa 1969-1970?

It would have been during Al Collins' show
so perhaps Jazzbeaux was funning with some
sound effects. Or could it have been
"secret code" messages from the CIA using
KFI's 50 gallons as the conveyance?

Marvin Collins--were you at KFI then and
can you shed any light?

Dave -

Sorry for the delay in responding, but I've been away w/o internet access.

It was almost as if I was hearing actual birds off in the distance, but it went away when I muted the audio. I heard it for several days, both at home and in the car.

I haven't noticed it over the past week while I traveled from NE Wisconsin to Monmouth Illinois and back.
