WIND finally gets a local weekday show

SALEM Talk WIND-A/CHICAGO inks crosstown CBS Country WUSN (US-99.5) morning man BIG JOHN HOWELL as its new morning host, reports the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES' ROBERT FEDER. HOWELL will be joineed by former WLS-A news anchor/reporter CISCO COTTO for the show, which replaces SALEM's syndicated BILL BENNETT show on the schedule.

Why the hell would this guy leave US99.5 for lowly-rated WIND?

I think John has made his money and is bored doing the country music thing. Its a fresh chance do do something he's always wanted to do. IMO.

some people love the chance to take a station that's not doing well and see if they can improve the ratings. Maybe this is something he believes he can do and is willing to go for it. If this is something he wants to do, then I wish him go0d luck

I use to work with Cisco Cotto at WLS. He's a pro's pro ! When I read about him making the move to WIND as a talk host, I'm glad he made that decision. He would do news during Eileen Byrne's program and would banter back and forth on the topics with her, Cisco would always hold his own. He's a great guy and I wish him nothing but the best!

I couldn't agree more Chris. This should be good radio with both on board. By the way, if I may ask, what have you been doing since you left WLS? I use to listen to you on your fill-in shifts.

First Brian, thanks for remembering, I really appreciate that. Currently, I'm the morning news anchor for the City of Colleges of Chicago's radio station, 89.3 FM, WKKC, 6-9am, Monday-Friday. Also, I co-host a sports show called "The Sports Connection", Saturday mornings at 11am on WKKC as well. I'm looking into some other possibilties now,but if anything comes up, I'll make sure to post it here.

Long Live Radio,
Chris Base.

Sorry. I was trying to say City Colleges of Chicago's radio station in that last post. I need sleep.

Ok, my little kiddies. Read and learn

The big "J" as I like to call him just made the BIGGEST mistake of his natural radio career, or what is left of it. He left the FM country powerhouse for a low ranked, start-up am po-donk station with a news guy from shadow/metro? Huge mistake. You will recall 3 years ago he tried this little manuver by going to Oldies 104. Hmmmm, Hated It! He quickly crawled back with his fat belly dragging for his job back. Oh, and for those of you keeping score today.... he took a huge pay cut for that little stunt.

You do not dis the loyal country fans. They will hunt you down and kill you. Once again, for the score keepers. The Big J, is not getting a pay increase for this little move. I know this for a fact! This show will take off like a yugo pulling a trailer of [EDIT]slow. It will have 2 speeds, stop and backwards. John is a decent morning host, but to put him on AM with no format is a train wreck and he knows it. As for the comment made about he has enough money and he wants a change.
HAHAHAHAHA your a [EDIT]! You know nothing about radio or the likes.

[**EDIT]

Big J, I like to call him that. Did at one time make decent cash, Fact.
But his divorce and child support hurt him financially,Fact.
To make matters worse, the ratings of US99 have not been the best due to all the moves made at this station. Fact!

The outcome of all this will be, Big J will try this and know it will not work. He is hoping that US99 will keep the light on for him when he fails, problem is they have done that more than once and the light is flickering.

Best of luck, your gonna need it.

Give Big John and Cisco Cotto a chance to prove themselves before you go around "judging" them. I'm sure we could all critique your life, if you were in the public eye...but then most of us don't get our kicks tearing someone down...and remember...it takes an extremely talented person(s) to take a station from the bottom up to the top...so let's see what's going to happen on WIND AM-560 during the 5A-9A slot.

This is great, a local program, I am all for that...after all quite a few people have complained on the various radio boards that Salem tends to have mostly Satellite-fed programming on their stations....did Bill Bennett do that poorly in WIND's ratings?

I think that having a "local" morning show gives advertisers more opportunities and allows WIND to cover local events that are relevent to it's Chicago listeners. The remaining part of the day will still maintain a "national" focus.

Does BIG JOHN HOWELL have a conservative political ideology? It appears that Salem has a political agenda to promote with their non religious talk stations like WIND. So, I would assume that John Howell is on board with that ideology as well, correct? If this is not the case, he and Salem are in for a rough go of it.

I still long for the days when there where legitimate news/talk stations with local news and talk well balanced to include all political ideologies instead of WLS and Salem doing all conservative talk and Air America doing all liberal talk. KGO in San Francisco is a good example of how a news talk station should be run. Hard to believe that WLS and KGO are both (currently) run by Disney. WLS with the possible exception of Roe Conn is heavily tilted to the right. WLS makes WABC look left.

The contemporary listener wants their talk radio to reflect their beliefs and only their beliefs. They do not want to be challenged in any way, shape or form. As long as that is true, talk radio will remain polarized--and the conservative hosts will dominate because they got there before everyone else.

I'm fairly sure John is a conservative from the convo's I've had with him in the past. I think he's fairly moderate with a strong light lean but that's what I picked up not sure how correct that it is.

something tells me he's not a card carrying Democrat....although he wouldn't be the first to play the part...not even the first on WIND

Big John Howell and Cisco Cotto air their first WIND morning show at 5AM Thursday October 5th. Give it a listen and post your thoughts

I will have to give this a little more time. I listen in the car in the very early part of the show and it isn't really getting off the ground from what I have heard this week. It seems they are trying too hard to create some "chemistry" as if they can't decide to be folksy or serious. I think both have their good qualities, so I cannot call it a winner or loser yet.
