WIND, WTAQ THE SPANISH YEARS

Hey Guys:

I think David Eduardo could probably answer this question. But if anybody else knows:

When WTAQ (La Mexicana) and WIND (La Tremenda) went Spanish in 1985 what kind of Music formats did both stations carry?

Did WIND eventually go all Spanish talk?

Thanks

WTAQ was regional Mexican. WIND, till it went to fulltime Spanish language talk, was mostly regional Mexican, but with quite a bit of AC material tossed in, as well as some talk shows.

Hey David:

Thanks for that info and clearing that up for me. I had found some Tribune articles that gave the format of WIND at certian dates. Here is what I found:

1. 7-17-89 article says that WIND spins Mariachi and Ranchera Music.

2. 8-27-91 article says that WIND spins Ranchero "Mexican Country Music".

Could you tell me the exact date that WIND went all spnaish talk?

And getting off a topic a little: Would you know the exact date that WOJO became spanish? I found that the earliest date the call were used was Feb 1973.

I see that WOJO went Regional Mexican on Sept 1, 2000. Was it Spanish Top 40 or AC before that? In the broadcasting yearbooks it says that it was "Spanish Contemp Hit" as Radio Ambiente.

Thnaks David for your help. It is always appreciated.

"Mariachi" and "ranchera" besides being nearly synonymous, are elements of regional Mexican music. That broad fomat may include norteña, banda, durangüense, grupera, cumbia, cumbia norteña, alterado, etc.

It was a transition over the 1998-1999 period. There was no date... just an expansion of the noon talk block to cover the whole day.

Nobody at the station now was there then. You'd have to find something in a newspaper or magazine. I believe the station did some Spanish as the Wheeler's sister station to 1330 Evanston before changing the calls. WEAW had Spanish programming going back to the mid-60's-.

2000 was when we renamed it Que Buena. It had been regional with some AC and pop stuff tossed in for about two decades (I was an expert witness in their license revocation hearings in the early 80's, and it had been in that format since at least the late 70's).
