WIND

Will try to answer 2 of the questions on this excellent thread.

The song "Lake Shore Drive" is also still played on WDRV "The Drive". In fact, when they unveiled the WDRV call letters and this format a few years ago, that was the very first song they played on the station.

Another asked about Connie Szersen (sp?). Connie was last heard on the air in Chicago (as far as I know), during the last few months of WJMK 104.3 as an oldies station before the change to JACK-FM in '05. She was filling in and doing the Saturday night dance music show. Frankly, all her years off the air took a toll on her performance on WJMK, but it was nice to have her back for a time. Last I heard, she was and may still be with an advertising agency in the Chicago area.

I'll add my memory of Connie always starting her evening show on WIND (6 to 10 PM as I recall) with an Elvis record, and also the morning show with Bob DelGiorno, and his "Del Giorno, Chicago!!" sign off. But I don't recall him going to another station in the market. He seems to have totally disappeared after that stint.

And, adding to the list of former WCFL jocks who wound up on WIND's "Number One Music" format was Dick Williamson, who later went into management at WOJO when it was part English and part Spanish programming in the mid to late 70's.

One more memory that comes to mind is the old song "Lakeshore Drive" by Alliotah, Haines, and Jeremiah. Obviously just a "regional hit", but WIND used to play it often... and it used to sound SO good coming out of that old AM speaker in the car. Does anybody in Chicago still play it?

That song was missing on the Musicradio Rewind. The last time I heard it was in Decatur circa 1996 on an oldies lunch show. For those playing the home game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjNSmAl7hF0

I believe Stu Collins also was on WIND during the "#1 Music" days. Enjoyed him there and when he was with Westinghouse WOWO Ft. Wayne.

Bob DelGiorno is a local legend in New Orleans, where he's been doing mornings at WWL for twenty years or so. He was on the air almost continuously during Katrina - and for a couple months after the storm, his show was simulcast on every station in the city that was still on the air.

WIND had a customized version of Lakeshore Drive, where they would say "I-N-D" instead of "L-S-D". Great stuff for sure.

As for Connie... hope she's doing well... and glad to hear she got to do some shifts on JMK. She and Nancy Turner (on the old WMAQ) were two of the best female jocks that ever passed through the city.

Maybe it's because I grew up with WIND, but I would echo others thoughts by saying this is one of the best and most enjoyable threads I've seen on these boards in quite a while. It's a shame that we're talking about what was on the air 30 years ago, instead of today... but the fact that the memories of that station are so vivid is a real testament to the awesome potential of radio.

As did WDHF.

One more memory comes to mind - when WIND did a "battle for best record" weekend a few times, and pit the "champion against the challenger". Listeners would call in to vote for which of the 2 songs they liked better, and the "champion" would get played again either next or within a couple of songs.

I remember one stretch where "Love Me Tender" by Elvis was the "champion" something like 25 straight times and was played something like 4 times an hour for over 6 hours, and played entirely. OK, 2+ minutes isn't that long, but to hear the same song even more often than the "top 40 days" of once every 90 minutes sure made it seem that way.

You are referring to the "Music Battle." I copied that on 3 pf the 4 stations I owned and eventually sold it to a body shop.

What a fabulous way to find out what your audience really likes.

Good memory:) Being a suburban boy I never made it to the kite fly... but I remember hearing the promos, using "Saturday In The Park".

Here's a trivia question for you guys: What was their positioning statement? They used it for YEARS. First correct answer gets an "I Love You Chicago" T-shirt and a six-pack of hit singles. Let's start with caller 10, at 591-5600...

(60's news intro; BREEM, BREEM, BREEM, BREEM)

"Dick Ellott with WIND News at 9:30
brought to you by
Uptown Federal Savings, 4545 Broadway...Come on Uptown!"

During the news/talk era:

"We want you to know ... that your dial is set at 56, WIND, Chicago, A Group W/Westinghouse station."

Their 30-second jingle was:

We want you to know.
The latest news. Your neighbor's views.
We want you to know Chicago.
We want you to know.
The weather and sports. The traffic reports.
We want you to know Chicago.
On WIND.
We want you to know.

"...
When you hear the sound of the city
Fill the air with song,
Then you know
You're in Chi-ca-go.
W-I-N-D
Chi - ca - go."

. . . . who could forget about the annual WIND kite fly held in Grant Park?
WOWO used to do a kite fly in the early 70s, too. I also remember Stu Collins on WOWO (afternoons, replaced by Chris Roberts) and Bob Dell (evenings, replaced by Ron Gregory).

WIND definitely DID NOT segue from all-oldies to talk. I worked there from 1975 to 1978, and during that time they were a rockin' Top 40 station, with talk from 10pm to 5am. During the music hours, we were competing with WLS and WCFL.

The air staff during that time was:
Bob DelGiorno 5-9am
Chuck Benson 9-2pm
Stu Collins 2-6pm
Connie Szerzen 6-10pm
Dave Baum - "Contact" 10-Midnight
Chicago Eddie Schwartz Midnight-5am

WIND had great fill-in talent during those years including Gary Gears, Joel Sebastian, Clark Weber, Doug Dahlgren and others. Weber and Dahlgren not only did music show back up, but they also backed up the talk hosts. I have an aircheck of Weber filling in for Schwartz, and Weber was great as a talk show host.

WIND carried the Bulls games with Jim Durham, and the station had a solid news department too.

The WOWO-WIND connection is likely due to Al Mitchell, the WIND PD in that era. Al came from WOWO and brought along WOWO promotions like the annual Kite Fly and the annual Zoo Day. Al is now a voiceover guy in Chicago.

If you want to catch Dave Baum, he now does a weekly call in talk show on talkzone dot com.

One note about Howard Miller, the station brought him back to do a Sunday night talk show around 1978. He was a lot of fun to work with and was always pushing the envelope with his topics and guests.

If I remember correctly WIND did their last music show in 1978--late summer I believe.
Steve King hosted the show and I have a tape of it somewhere.
