Windy City

For all the attention paid to NYC, I think they're more upset in Chicago:

It seems as though the only choice now for Oldies in the city is WRLL, 1690, which is owned by... Clear Channel. Thankfully in my area all the oldies stations, except one, are locally owned and operated.

Is that important as a listener - who owns the station?

It's important in terms of how much longer it's likely to remain an oldies station.

Let's give Clear Channel some credit for hanging in there with WRLL. They could have "sold out" to Air America, who was looking for a Chicago outlet a couple of months ago and ended up on a low power daytime-only station. Cincinnati's Real Oldies station, also owned by Clear Channel, lasted two years (then flipped to Air America). WRLL celebrates its 2nd anniversary in September. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Re: Radio Heaven

Radio Heaven would be hearing stations as they sounded from 1965-1971 doing Top 40. Particularly WABC, but many, many more.

WCBS-FM from 1974-1980 was pretty close to Radio Heaven as well. Why not 1972-1973. I think they did not get themselves together progessionally until 1974. That is when they started to sound very good, but their music during the seventies was always good.

I always felt "radio heaven" meant "to be in a location where you could pick up two or more stations of your favorite format" in my case it would be two or more oldies stations. I lived in Washington DC in the early '90s, and for a while we had two oldies stations: WBIG and XTRA 104. It was competitive and fun.
When I would travel down to Florida I would pick up Two or three oldies stations at the same time (mostly when I was in between larger cities). It was pure oldies radio heaven to me. And this was back in the good 'ol days of the '55-'72 formatted stations.

Re: Radio Heaven

According to your definition, radio heaven would be Cape Hatteras, NC. I stood on the beach in 1974 at around one in the afternoon and listened to WABC coming in loud and clear. I also rocked to other stations, though the stations from Phila., DC, Boston and other cities were mostly non rock, such as WBZ.

I probably also got WAPE from Jacksonville up there. All daytime reception.

In East Hampton, LI, NY, at night dxing, I listened to CKLW,WRKO, WABC, WNBC, WIBG, WPOP, WPRO, WLS and others. How does that compare to radio heaven?

Re: Radio Heaven

Well, radio heaven is here in Central Virginia (considering the amount of stations). Where I am at is between Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, and Richmond, each of which contain an oldies station. There is also one here in my hometown, locally. Depending on which area I am in, BIG 100 from DC and WZZU 97.9/ Lynchburg are also receivable. So, a good area for Oldies.

Not really. You listen to it, and if it changes, you move on.

I'm not sure what the original point was... that Oldies fans in Chicago shouldn't listen to WRLL because it's Clear Channel? Seems like a lousy way to keep the format viable.

Actually, I think they went on the air in October . . .

It is if who owns the station pulls the plug on your favorite format.
