WING 1410 hits a new low!

Listening to WING 1410, Dayton's ESPN affiliate, early Monday I noticed they now have started airing ... get ready ... PSA's courtesy of the Ad Council! (I thought only WONE 980, the FOX Sports affiliate, did those!) Previously 90% of WING's commercials were for other ESPN shows--just goes to show it's struggling for advertisers. (I wrote to WING asking them to air a recording of the day's scores instead of give plugs to Mike and Mike, Scott Van Pelt, Colin Cowherd, etc.

How long will it be before WING 1410 severs ties to ESPN?

It is a real shame that no one at Main Line either knows how to program WING and also sell it.
They seem to throw on the switch for ESPN without putting a real effort into placing local elements as part of the programming. They seem to stay away from high school play by play like its posion. The local afternoon show host lacks focus and he might get better if someone who work with him. They could have done soemthing with the Dragons but missed the opportunity.

The local management seems to treat WING like a step child. I say if they don't want it then sell to someone who can really do something with it. The problem is I would hate to see what Main Line would put on a price tag .

PSA's on ESPN affiliates is pretty common. I was just in Denver and Phoenix and it was the same thing in those 2 cities on the Fox Sports and ESPN stations. In fact in Denver 850 KOA, the 50,000 watt Voice of the West; often times airs PSA's during the weekend syndicated and best of shows; which is sadder then PSA's on ESPN affiliates that struggle to pull a 1 share.

Remember, this is the same station that would air hours of "CBS Radio Network Channel 04....BEEEEEEP!" because no one was paying attention. At least with WLW booming in it doesn't matter if they botch the Reds games up.

I'm trying to figure out why last fall they only ran half of the Westwood One Sunday NFL games. Did WW1 cut the network offering back to just one game, is WING only taking one game each week, or do NFL rules not allow them to run a WW1 game opposite the Bengals on another station?

Man I hate to hear this. The way this station has been going is like watching a once vital and vibrant friend slip into oblivion with alzheimer's disease. I no longer live in the market (in Knoxville Tn now) but I was there and remember the days of "high flying wing" in the days of Lou Swanson, later Steve Kirk and countless others who with their talent and the right programming made that station dominate in the market. Now look at it. Yea, I know the days of a 5000 watt am dominating a market with some pretty good fm's are gone but this grand old lady, Dayton's first radio station, deserves better than that.
Seems like the last time I was up there (last summer) the night coverage was not as good. I was in Trotwood and the co-channel interference was horrible. Wonder how a format consisting of music from wing's glory days, says the 60's and 70's would work? Bring out the old Pams Jingles and the whole nine yards. Create a "Radio Time Machine" if you will. With the proper audio processing, music on am can sound super. We have an am in nearby Clinton (WYSH 1380) that does classic country and their audio is better than many larger am's I've heard. I sure hope those in power do not let this heritage station continue on a path to a slow death.

The Fan here in Columbus (previously 1460, now 97.1) has been running the same Ad Council PSAs for years. I hear some of the same ones now as I did in college, and I graduated from Toledo in 2000!

WING is like the rest of the AM band(With WTVN and WLW exceptions)and is dying a slow death. The days of Steve Kirk aka "Kirkie" are long gone. It's a shame what has happened to some of these heritage AM stations that once meant something, like WING and WIZE. I guess you can't stand in the way of progress.

Schmave, thanks for posting about 97.1 The Fan/Columbus. I got busy yesterday and forgot to post that they also play PSAs...on a 20,000 watt FM stick.

Since two ESPN stations are running the same ad counsel public service announcements, could it be ESPN who is feeding the PSA instead of it being programmed at the local level?

I assume that if a station has a commercial sponsor, it could run it rather than take the feed that contains a P.S.A. It is strange that ESPN would be running ten-year old P.S.A.'s as was noted. I recall Mutual using a Radio Free Europe PSA that was two years old, but ten years?

I'm sort of at a disadvantage here. I don't listen to WING and am only an occaisional listener to 97.1.

I think I've head the spots on 97.1. What I don't know is the position the PSA's are showing up. Whether it's during the networks portion of the commercial break or the local stations commercial break. I'm also not sure of the clock structure.

Just found a "Network Clock" for ESPN online (thanks to Google).

This is what it states

"EXACT TIME for 59:50 break
The Network covers all local breaks
EXCEPT the :10 Local ID @ 59:50 which is silent."

So Yes, ESPN appears to Fill Local breaks.. It does not say specifically PSAs.. But my GUESS without hearing the network feed is that the local breaks are filled with a) ESPN promos b) PSAs.

This is so sad..Dayton's first has become Dayton's worst. Pure negligence, pure stupidity. I stopped listening in 1988 when it went to sattellite oldies, then CNN Headline News and I can go on. They tried C-QUAM AM stereo in the mid 80s when it was still Adult Radio 1410 and Kirkie was still on board along with Carl Day doing afternoons...which was far better than what it is today.

To this day I ask myself: "what if the FCC allowed only ONE AM stereo system as the norm...would THAT have saved AM???" IF the home stereo system manufacturers would have given C-QUAM AM stereo the positive nod, the AM broadcast band might have had a keroscene cat's chance to thrive once again.

Even old PSA's from ESPN that are cover or fillers is bad enough. Don't most nets fill with promos or bonus spots? I know Limbaugh used to years ago have the faux spatuala city spots during local cut away among other things.

One would get the impression that they're really wingin' it... ::)

Let's face Main Line and everyone on East David hs showed they don't care about WING.
It's real shame because the station has the potential to greatly improve their bottom line and could also pick up some listeners along the way.

It is beyond me that a company that could use a nice cash infusion could care less about the station. I could outline a number of ways they can make money but their focus has never been on WING.. I must point out that I don't work for them and don't know the principals involved.

They may have been right to dump WKSW for Click even though Kiss did make them money. A friend once told me the reason why Radio One never sold off their only country outlet in the company is because the station made them money. Main Line picked up on that revenue base but believes the new Click will generate far more revenue. If the station can hold their rate card or near it the station will moe money for them. One of the reasons is because they hve no air talent to pay for.

It's is amazing to me how there are so many people that believes K99 is the best thing in country radio. It's interesting how other markets can do well with several country stations but Cox is so good and so big that no one can beat them. I guess the really good programmers are around with the guts and talent to take on Nick Roberts. Is Nick good? YES. Is he the best at what he does? No way. WUBE as well as 5 or so country stations in the Tri State are just as good as K99 or a lot better. WUBE leaves K99 in the dust.

It kills me even though Main Line doesn't care or Know how to make money off of WING. The bottom ine is they don't seem to care. What is really a disappointment is that management on East David doesn't seem to care either. Steve Kirk built a legend an Main Line could care less it seems.

Not only did Steve Kirk made this station what it was,you can also credit Lou Swanson,Bob Holiday and of course Gene "By Golly" Barry.
King and Dorsey kept it going in the early 80s during the WTUE and WDJX onslaught and by the late 80s it wasn't flying high anymore.
I stopped listening in 1990 when it was airing Headline News continuously.

So sad.

Bingo. It's not WING running the PSAs or ESPN Radio promos... rather, they didn't bother to fill in the spot load on their automation computer, or they never have had ads scheduled to run during that timeframe.

Even ESPN O&O WMVP/1000 in Chicago (!!!) will run ESPN entirely off the bird in overnights with no local spot loads whatsoever.
