WINR

Clear Channel has been operating translator W221AX on 96.9 as a simulcast of WENE. They have now put a simulcast of WINR on that channel, and are rebranding themselves on the air as "Oldies 96-9." I note that the "oldies" content has changed, too. Real Oldies is gone, and they are now offering oldies "from the '60s to the '80s." No more '50s. They just played a song by the B-52s.

Some corrections:
96.9 is W245BV. It replaced W221AX, which was on 92.1. W221AX was being displaced due to upgrades to WHVM, Owego on 91.9.
96.9 never rebroadcasted WENE. It rebroadcasted WINR from the time it was turned on last week. The original license application and construction permit specified WENE as the parent station, but it never operated that way.

So another good oldies format is wrecked for the usual same-old same-old playlist of oldies. Guess I don't need to tune 680/96.9 in now.

Jon, thanks for the correction. My "source" was Radio-Locator which apparently had it wrong. Is W245BV licensed to Endwell?

I also agree with JimH that the "Real Oldies" format was a good one and will be missed. You can find it on iHeartRadio's app -- I don't know if any of the Clear Channel stations broadcast it though.

W245BV is licensed to, and located in, Endwell. The old 92.1 translator was licensed to Endwell, but located in Vestal.

As to the "Real Oldies" format, when WINR picked it up, it was the only CC station running the format on a primary signal. It was meant to be used on HD-2 stations. WBBD 1400 in Wheeling, WV was also "Real Oldies", but they have since switched to 24/7 Comedy.

Real Oldies lives on at iHeartRadio: http://www.iheart.com/live/Real-Oldies-4717/

I wasn't keeping up with current events until I tuned the AM radio in my newly purchased 1965 Buick Skylark to WINR, and was surprised to hear the Oldies 96.9 branding.

I had heard it through the grapevine that the WBBI 'big' format was going to this translator, and I thought it was going to be via an HD-2 signal. I had never thought of it being WINR. I guess the 60s to 80s format is similar to the Big format.

Too bad, as the 'real oldies' format would have sounded better blaring through that little dash speaker of my old ride...

I wonder what the audio processing is on the AM side... The same as the 'old' one?... John?...

The format on Oldies 96.9 is exactly what was on Big 107.5. Same jocks, same playlist, different branding.

The WINR audio processing is the physically the same as it was with Real Oldies, but we tweaked it a little for the format.
