WINS AM analog vs HD-2 aircheck

Recorded from an Acurian's output w/tone set at "normal"(flat) Starting with AM analog and then the FM HD-2. The only enhancement was to trim 3 sec off the buffering transition.

As a long time AM listener, I consider the analog fine for the sort of utilitarian use that news stations get, still it's easy to tell which most will consider better sound added to the fact that it's FM carrier is immune to the effects of noise.

Can you give me a list of what HD-2 channels come in NYC?
Will a Radio Shack Antenna wire for 5 bucks pull in all the HD channels?

-Reasonably up to date.

http://www.december.com/places/nyc/radio.html Less-so but still adequate.

The Acurian comes with two FM antennas: a single 30'' and a standard FM dipole. Both have been adequate for this area (Manhattan) But a cheap rabbit ears is easier to manipulate and neater Make sure it has a 75ohm coax plug or you'll need a transformer

AM is a typical loop approx 4'' the same as I have gotten with other modern sets that don't have internal ferrite sticks. I find it "OK" but haven't been able to lock WCBS-am reliably. As with other digital tuners, it's best to keep the AM loop atleast 2 ft from the set to avoid hash from the processor.

AM analog selectivity is the best I have ever seen in a commercial set and sensitivity, near best.

FM analog is only "above average" very good selectivity, OK sensitivity.

AT this point I would counsel people to wait untill next year and see what the new SAmsung chip based sets offer.

Lino,

I think that is a very fair assessment of the situation. So what is an AM listener to do while they wait for the new Samsung chip based radios to come on the market? My guess is "listen to something else." Is that FM, Internet Radio, Pod-Casts, CD', their cell phone or maybe just music downloads on their iPod? In any case, the more people you drive away from radio right now, the less likely it is that they will ever return.

This is silly.

I can not understand why 102.7-HD2 is simulcasting WINS. I wish there would be an Adult Standards station there or another format missing in NYC.

Adult Standards apparently hasn't been officially sanctioned as a New York offering by the the HD Alliance, so you're out of luck.

Agreements like this to put AM stations on a multicast channel of an FM HD are a great (if partial) solution to the potential hassles (and interference) of AM HD!

Anybody listened to this aircheck on a system with real bass extension? The signal on the HD2 sounds VERY bass heavy/boomy. I would have expected the opposite...for it to sound much brighter than the analog AM!
