WINS Goes After WEMP

I haven't seen anyone comment about this on this board nor the other popular message board about New York radio, so submitted for your approval:

Has anyone heard the new promo WINS has been running for their traffic and weather updates? The line from the promo that stands out for me is "reports that are not a waste of time" - no doubt a veiled potshot at WEMP's lengthy traffic and weather updates.

Oh, and I believe the promo closes with WINS referring to itself as "New York's only all-news station." Those silly folks at CBS are just asking for another C&D from the "Merlin mascot," aren't they? :D

Wow...you really spend a lot of time hating Merlin and their products.

The fact that WINS is even acknowledging WEMP is a win for Merlin. Funny how everyone thinks WEMP's a joke, yet it seems to require counter-programming from the all-mighty WINS. Where's the outrage towards them for acknowledging something that supposedly isn't even its league?

And to be accurate, CBS is the one that issued the C&D. In Chicago.

How is it REALLY a win for Merlin?

It sounds pretty generic and without ANY reference to WEMP (saying, "We're NOT 'FM News 101.9!'" would be an acknowledgement). And such "counter-programming" by WINS is in fact the unaltered tried-and-true all-news model that they've used for close to 46 years. They haven't changed, yet WEMP will soon be abandoning their female lean in favor of a traditional all-news wheel. Hmm.

And it's not as if WEMP has had ANY external marketing campaign of note. So who really knows the station exists?

Sad if WINS does a better job 'marketing' WEMP than WEMP itself with a generic potshot liner.

You're right...some poor choices of words (specifically: win, counter-programming). My point is that you can't be a joke and taken seriously at the same time. If someone is going to make a thread about how this promo is a knock on WEMP, it has to be one of two things: 1) WINS takes them seriously as competition and feels the need to make a point of differentiation, or 2) This promo is generic enough that it has nothing to do with WEMP, and therefore isn't evidence of how big of a joke WEMP is.
