What makes you think KYW and WINS don't make money, need higher ratings and do not have a good future?

I was just thinking that nothing lasts forever. But, I imagine KYW, WINS & a few other
stations willl continue with Alll news on AM or FM for quite a while without breaking format.

While not exactly an epochal achievement, WCBS 880 finished number one on Long Island not too many weeks back. They were the Yankee station then. The suburbs reputedly are where WCBS serves well. I can't remember the last AM station to finish tops in the Nassau-Suffolk book.

So the thought goes that it would be WCBS 880, not WINS, to carry sports.
If it comes down to that.

And neither WINS nor KYW have the super-signal-scooper at night which the clears like WPHT, WFAN, WPHT, WCBS and WABC have. But there are no holes in the shoes of WINS or KYW.

The future also depends on which * sports * are going to air, if and when the time does come to consider the intrusion on brand purity. Baseball and maybe football, yes.
Soccer, basketball (pro and college), hockey, NASCAR, backgammon, etc, probably not.

(I remember a goof liner/separator that the Late Bob Dayton -- WABC, WCBS-FM -- cut for WGBB on Long Island when he worked there. It had some musical flourish and went, 'WGBB..... No matter how bad things get, we're NOT going Disco. :- )

Off the top of my head, KYW did run the Phillies back around 1980 and 1981.

Both stations are parts of clusters and do not operate independently. CBS, in all probability, will go after sports contracts, 1010 WINS and KYW are not the stations in their respective clusters where they are most likely to put the games on a regular basis. When seasons overlap and scheduling conflicts occur, there is every possibility games could end up on either station. It has, for instance, happened with WWJ.

This assumes both stations stay 24/7 all news and don't start doing talk (or sports) evenings, overnights or weekends like WBZ.

Never say never.

Let's face it, when it comes to program material, news is something we'll never run out of...

Especiallly on stations that repeat news stories several times each hour. (plus mind--numbing repetition of
traffic----weather---sports.)

...which is precisely by design. If you've ever heard WINS' long running liner "You give us 22 minutes, we'll give you the world," you just heard a perfect description of the stations' expected TSL.

Back in the late 1970s the Yankees were carried on WINS. I don't know of any other time when sports play by play was covered on WINS. This winter WCBS 880 is the overflow station for the Nets and Devils. I assume that next September when the Yankees are on WFAN, WCBS 880 will be the overflow station with the football Giants.

I don't recalll the Yankees games on 1010---WINS in the late 70's. But I
recall WABC picked up the Yanks games in the early 80's & soon music radio 77 died.
