WINS Vs WCBS AM News Radio

Just wondering if people prefer WINS or WCBS-AM for their All News Radio. Sometimes I'll listen to WCBS-AM News magazine hour with team coverage making them have the edge over WINS, then other times of the day It seems WINS has a much better news delivering the news in terms of the reading of the news sounding a little better then WCBS-AM. How does everyone favor WINS or WCBS-AM ?

Personally I like WINS a lot more. I think a lot of it has to do with the fast paced atmosphere and less than traditional news reports. Ever listen to WINS during morning drivetime? I love Alice Stockton-Rossini's reports which throw in a good amount of comedic value(she once reported a story in rhymes!), while John Montone is one of the most down to earth reporters I've heard.

I've also preferred WCBS over WINS here in central Connecticut. The daytime signal is also much better around here, which helps. The only time I may check out WINS is if I'm in midtown Manhattan, where their signal is a bit better. WCBS being the Yankees radio network flagship is another plus for me. :)

I agree, WINS seems to have the edge on radio announcers and overall news delivery thought there are many times I'll tune in to WCBS 880 and hear better announcers at the time of WINS newscast.

880 is one of the most used buttons in my car radio when I need to find out what happening and have just a few minutes to check in. I HATE the Yankee games on WCBS as they totally change my listening habits and force me to had over to 1010 when I need to know ASAP. Problem there is that I know CBS and their format and don't know WINS. I'm thinking I am not alone in this.

WINS seems to be more headline oriented and has a more urgent/old fashioned style of news delivery. WCBS has a news cycle of 30 minutes instead of a 20 minute news cycle WINS employs, so to me the listen is not as rushed as WINS and the news content is a touch more comprehensive.

WCBS is my station of choice and 880 is tuned to my HD radio so often, I'm afraid that it's going to get stuck there.

I really can't find WINS beating WCBS in any area, expect name recognition (and ratings) in the city.

WCBS focuses a great deal more on suburbs and its signal is one of the best (second to WABC) in Rockland and Orange counties. I can drive from Long Island or any of the boroughs - 2 hours north of Manhattan and never really have to get annoyed with static.

The 30-minute news cycle on WCBS is another advantage over the 20-minute cycle on WINS. There's more news and more detailed reports.

Anchors on WCBS are more like hosts - listeners (myself included) feel more connected to them versus WINS anchors who tell you the headlines and never deviate from their rundowns.

WCBS also has better traffic reports--served by Shadow--which cover a larger radius outside of the city. Not to mention, they've got the best traffic guy in New York - Gene Michaels.

Their jingles are the best, too - at :59, :14, :30 and :44 after the hour.

I've been a P1 of WCBS-AM -- uninterruptedly -- since the 1970's. And while I have the greatest respect for Gene Michaels, one cannot say "best traffic guy in New York" without mentioning Pete Tauriello. After working with him all morning, on my way home from the day job, I pop in to WINS on the 1's just to hear him.

And he knows it. :D

WEMP killed itself. WCBS and WINS just kept plugging along, doing what they do best.
