What???? is it true that NONE of the local radio stations are broadcasting the WS-Dash games this year???? What???? A new exciting baseball team and new stadium come into the city and aren`t being broadcast on radio. What????

This still doesn`t answer my question!!!!! Whay aren`t the Dash games being broadcast on local radio like maybe WSJS?????

Here's the reason - no money! The DASH won't pay what it would cost for airtime on a decent station, and the station can't make any money selling it! Pretty simple.

I beg to differ... I have lived in very small towns like Rome, GA where the class A games are ALWAYS broadcast on a local FM station. Hell, Winston-Salem NC is much bigger with many more people. What knowledge do you have about the Dash not wanting to pay radio stations? How do you know that the advertising won`t sell, when it hasn`t even been given a chance????? Alot of VERY hasty generalizations here- very simple???

Keeee-recttt!!! The DASH won't pay and you can't sell the inventory. Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding! Small markets can get away with that kind of stuff because there aren't as many advertisers and there's more passion in the community about the local team. Duhhhh! The GSO market is classified as a large market and most FM's cater to both Winston-Salem and Greensboro, so they're not going to piss off half the market with their programming. Greensboro has its own team! The sports you hear on stations in this market are paying for the privelege of broadcast.

No passion for Dash games???? Every night I ride by the Dash Stadium when there is a game, the place is packed and sold-out. Your explantion has many holes..... I have seen many markets this size and bigger where the local minor league Baseball team does GREAT on radio. There seems to be a lack of focus and energy by some stations in this local market. Take a trip around the dial, and that becomes VERY clear to see......

Here's what happened when the Dash was "new and exciting." Attendance in the 300s.

And oldies used to be in every market. Baseball wasn't on the tv every day, only on the radio once a week, except for the local team. Times change.

Why? Because They aren't doing what you want or expect them to do.
Don't you think if They could make money at it, They would do it? Call your favorite station and sell them on the idea, man. Go for it.
Maybe it was the Dash who decided not to broadcast the games? I'd look into it, if it bothered me that much.
www.wsdash.com is doing every game home and away on the internet. Website also has media relations guy's email.

Here's another clue: Look for this phrase in the following article:
"You want to get people in the habit of going to the games."

So, that's probably your answer in this case, more than "radio is lazy."

Several teams have taken the Internet Route. The amazing thing is that Internet Video Streaming is FREE as long as you can put up with the lower third ads that pop up occasionally.

Local Radio has priced themselves out of business. All a Team needs to do is set up a PC with a webcam and they are streaming their games. They can add more cameras, more audio - even bundle in the advertising - all streamed live. (Plus the record the games for later viewing.)

There was a time when the Radio stations broadcast the games (including local high school games) and did think anything about it. But then, we had local owners back then.

Some stations lose money on Duke, UNC, or Panthers games. Why in Hades would you wanna put something on your air that a TIIIIIIIIIINY percentage of your audience cared about?

I still beg to differ.... The attendance at the new Dash games has increased bby about 40 times of what the old WS Minor league baseball team was averaging. I would think that a loacl station like WSJS-AM would be HOT on the trail to broadcast these Dash games.

It's the same team, just a different name.
You can beg to differ all you want, but if you don't do anything about it, you'll just be differing forever.
It's only a few months of the year. Put together a package, run it around town, and make your dreams come true.
Then you can rub it in the face of all of us, and conventional wisdom, and all that is against your idea currently.

So far, your only argument has been that you've driven by the stadium and the place is packed. Of course it is, it's a brand new stadium. I can tell you when Greensboro's new ballpark opened (and still to some degree today), that people would go to the ballpark because it was downtown and new. It's a social thing. The baseball game was at best, secondary. The people at the ballpark weren't even paying attention to the game. They'd come to hang out after work, have a couple of beverages, see and be seen. It had nothing to do with the game. Why are the Dash not on the radio? Because I would suggest attendance at the ballpark has nothing to do with the game itself. Look at attendance at Ernie Shore. No one cared about the team then. And no one cares about them now. They care about the social scene of a brand new ball park. You want to put that on the radio??

XTALKER knows the Winston-Salem market very well. He also knows the Twin City radio environment very well too. He is quite aware of the subject matter of which he speaks. And speaking of generalizations, how about you assuming it will work because W-S is much bigger etc. The FMs aren't going to do it. Most of the AMs are operated by religious groups or the Eppersons who claim to be religious. That leaves WSJS and they're struggling since they lost Rush. What station is going to do it? And please keep in mind you are also going to need a significant signal. But the kicker to this whole discussion is how many people are interested in listening to minor league baseball on the radio? Not very many. The real people are going to be enjoying the games at the new baseball park. And lets not even get into discussing the away games, sending someone on road and the logistics of getting away games on the air (even in this day of cell phones), and for what? A very SMALL audience at best. One thing you should remember, radio stations are in business to make money $$$$. And given the time, effort and all the other variables involved, its not economically feasible. Oh, one more thing Baseball, especially minor league base on the radio is really really BORING!

I work with Andy Durham, who broadcasts the Grasshoppers. He has a loyal listenership and through the Internet, that includes families of the players.

Being a somewhat rabid minor league baseball fan, I listen to the games even at the games because what the radio brings to the game experience. I personally know a few folks who listen to the games when they can't make it. It's not a BIG audience; but it is a loyal, niche audience and a good salesman and work with that.
