Winter Arbitron Ratings

http://www.radioandrecords.com/RRRatings/DetailsPage.aspx?MID=179&RY=2007&RQ=1&MP=0&OTHER=2&MN=Nassau-Suffolk&MS=NY&MR=18&12P=2373900&UP=4/30/2007&SU=CM&BPER=9.5&HPER=12.6&OPER=&NSD=5/29/2007&CE=0

Winners:
WBAB - When was the last time they had higher ratings than sister station WBLI?
B-103
Fresh 102.7 - Looks like it's popular out here on the Island
Jack
WSKQ
WQBU - New regional Mexican station on 92.7 doubled the numbers it had simulcasting WCAA
WXPK - They can't even be heard clearly on LI, yet they tied WMJC and WRCN.
WEPN - Finally have a full share!

Losers:
WBLI
WFAN
WHLI - Going off the air earlier in the winter doesn't help them
Hot 97
WBLS
WKTU
WQXR
WMJC - They dropped the "Island" name and dropped further in the ratings
WRCN

Indeed, it was a great book for WBAB, not so great for WBLI. They're also behind Z100. Some of BAB's increase seems to have come at the expense of Q104, which was down half a share.

WALK seems to be trending slightly downwards, while Lite remained even. Fresh seems to be getting its listeners from PLJ, WMJC, and to an extent, WALK.

I still don't understand why they dropped the "Island" name over at 94.3. WMJC just doesn't roll off the tongue very well. From what I hear, the station manages to bill decently, but come on...they've fallen behind stations from the East End and Hartford, CT, and are even with The Peak out of Westchester.

Free FM doesn't seem to be gaining any traction on LI either.

WFAN nosedived, down a full share. And this book doesn't include any of the fallout from the Imus firing. It'll be interesting to see how they do in the next book.

Jack seems to be inching upwards in LI, just like in the overall NYC book, while PLJ also inched downwards.

Terrible book for Hot 97 on LI, down almost a full share.

I made a suggestion on "another" message board, so I might as well post the same question here:

Seeing that a AAA station from Westchester, with a poor (at best) signal on LI, received the same share as several underperforming LI stations, should Barnstable consider flipping WMJC & WRCN to a AAA format similar to the Peak? It would have a decent signal (albeit on 2 frequencies) from mid-Nassau all the way to the Hamptons.

BAB was extremely strong. They owned the male demos and did great all across the board. BAB had a 4.2 12+, but even better was mornings with a 4.8 12+. Roger & JP also pulled a 9.2 men 25-54 and were .4 behind perenial morning powerhouse WALK breakfast club. It looks like those guys are doing a nice job of pulling people in and Donna Donna is doing a great job keeping them.

I can't see it doing worse than Island or RCN. I guess the East End could still use it's "own" classic rock station, especially now that The Bone is gone, but does it really matter to most people? They get BAB out there on 95.3. There's also that station from Mohegan Sun further out on 104.7, plus the classic rockers like PLR from Connecticut.

As for 94.3, it seems to be losing a lot of its already small audience to stations like Jack and Fresh. I've heard the billing is still decent, relatively speaking, and that Barnstable is reluctant to sell, but it might not be a bad idea to flip formats. Looking beyond WXPK, the success of WEHM out East shows that the AAA format is quite viable on Long Island. In fact, I wish that NYC had a station like 'EHM (or Party 105 or WLNG or 'LIR for that matter...wouldn't that make things more interesting???)

AAA would be something certainly worth trying here on Long Island. It is apparently very successful on the East End. Given the popularity of Starbucks, it seems like a natural fit for NYC. The only thing close to a strong signal AAA station in New York is 90.7 WFUV. The turnoff of WFUV for the mainstream AAA listener is that it skews a bit too ecclectic. The magic of WEHM and The Peak is that they seem to walk that fine line of interesting new music and artists as well as old favourites. The rotation is also fine tuned to constantly be exposing the listeners to new and or different stuff, while maintaining enough of a base rotation that there is some day to day familiarity that listeners can identify with.

I'm not sure if gtreater Long Island per say would neccesarily support a AAA station. I'm sure it would have a loyal following. the question is a matter of how big of an audience would it build? I think this format would be great for Manhattan, and as WEHM has proven, it works great on the East End. Manhattan and the East End tend to be quite a bit different than most of Nassau and Suffolk though. Still, I think it would be worth a try. The question is where to try it? I'm not sure that WMJC and WRCN would be the best place. WRCN is a heritage rocker. It isn't doing any better or worse than it ever really has when you look at the coverage area and population. WMJC, well, you could almost define them as a sort of AAA. They have been adding some interesting selections that do cross over well between AAA-Progressive and their version of Hot AC.

Speaking of WMJC, if the signal seems quite a bit weaker than normal, its because they are having major work done on the tower.

I would guess that a good part of WBAB's increase also came on the east end, where the Bone faithful needed somewhere to migrate to.

BAB Sucks! The Bone Rocked! BAB is long islands #1 old geezer rock station. Never will i listen to them, i'd rather dx 106.9 out of CT, with the bleed of LIR, then EVER consider getting my rock fix from BAB.

Hey Hardrocker...relax and put in a cd! I'm sure the pd and air staff at BAB are thinking about how much you think they suck when their cashing their bonus checks. I would love them open their playlist up a bit, but they must be doing something right.
