Winter Book

Thoughts on 12+

- Feels like only yesterday WAQI was halfway down the book. How did it get so many listeners so quickly?
- All the same stuff at the top.
- POW is nice and up
- RMA is also on the up.
- WIOD is back to where it was a year ago.
- KIS keeps ticking down
- WINZ is up a little too. It's now tied with WMGE.
- QAM and WAXY tied. Heheh.
- SUA and QBA continue to hold hands on their way down the list, and MGE tags along.
- Hey WTPS! Haven't seen you around these parts.
- WLQY, WMEN, and WOCN soak in their zeroes.

WINZ being tied with WMGE has got to light some fires at CC. WMGE is horrific....I am bilingual and I avoid it like the plague. If they flip to Talk or Country, they could try to do something "different" than what is in the market. You can't much worse than 94.9 right now.

WAQI does a pretty good job as a newsradio with their updates and newscasts. Doesn't hurt Castro Watch 2006 is now Castro Watch 2007.

WPOW is up, but WQAM and WKIS on the way down for Beasley.

WQBA and WSUA going down is odd.....WAQI up, but those two down. Funny eh? WQBA with the Fish back now for 2007 should help.

WQAM and WAXY tied....all I can say is wow. I wonder how Neil Rogers did....for WQAM to be at 1.2.....Neil must have bombed (by his standards of course). I still am not convinced the Fish will end up on 790 when 560 drops them after 2007. Panthers possibly, but the Fish on 790 just doesn't seem right to me yet.

Hispanic programming is a company wide mission, so don't look for CC to drop the format anytime soon, especially in a market like Miami. WMGE's PD was recently blown out, then CC made significant changes to the station, dropping most of the "spanglish" talk and shiofting the music older. It's not going away.

WAQI has generally been a top 5 station, although the audience is pretty much 55 or even 65 plus.

Power had a great book but Insiders tell me it's mostly growth with men - inlcuding men 25 - 54. I wonder if this isn't a one book anomoly.

Big also appeared to have a great day, but really, the station returned to the levels they had before last Fall's strange down book. A market powerhouse.

Y's "Morning Zoo" appears to be making an impact. All the "naysayers" about an out of market show is BS a usual.

All the silly talk about Magic changing it's format should stop. The station is fine, as is Lincoln-Financial stablemate, WLYF, which appears to have shaken off some soft books.

QAM vs WAXY. I think it was said on another board. If WAXY can hang in another 5 years....the good news - for them - losing the Fins probably won't hurt them - they are "winning" the old fashioned way - with strong morning and afternoon drive programming, something QAM doesn't have.

They switched back to English formats at the Megas in Denver and Albuquerque, and there is rumor that Houston in next. Since most buys for Hispanic in Miami are 25+ and even 35 plus, Mega is not a good proposition. And they did not fire the PD, they fired the OM, Funcky Frank Walsh. The PD is Leo Vela, who can barely speak Spanish.

There has not been a major market Hispanic launch at Clear for nearly a year and a half, and about 10 of the Hispanic staitons have been sold.

When I visited old friends in Miami in Spring, my Puerto Rican friend said she missed Zeta and couldn't stand Mega, and wasn't the only one.

I'm sure somewhere Schnitt is slamming his fist.

This past winter, Clear Channel flipped WBZY in Atlanta from alternative rock to regional Mexican.

If WMGE does go away, that will be such a waste, not because it's a loss of what it is, but because a fairly decent, much beloved Zeta was blown up for no reason. At the time of the flip, Zeta was no doubt having ratings issues - just like every other rock station - BUT as I understand, it was still billing well. I'd still be very surprised if CC-Miami flipped 949 to news/talk or any spoken word variation.

WIOD is where they are because they have an all female news/traffic anchor staff. They made a huge mistake in laying off/demoting all the men. Most of the men that were demonted an now either quit of been fired. I was fired from WIOD for not coming back from my 12 week medical leave when my doctor said I was not ready so now I am on long term disability in which CC/Cigna is paying for but when I checked with EEOC they informed me that the all female thing was discrimination and them firing me for not coming back to work after FMLA was illegal as well. CC is breaking federal laws and they seem to be so powerful no-one cares. I am moving to Western North Carolina in a month and still getting better by the week. I should be able to make a full recovering by August to be able to go back to teaching. I have retired from radio broadcasting because of what has happened @ Clear Channel. They should have let well enough alone.

George, why do you continue to speak your nonsense? A check of IOD's web site shows more men than women on their news and traffic staff. If they did have an all chick news department, I could see that as kind of a cool counterpart to the all guy shows they have. But they don't. Sounds to me like you don't think women are as good as men when it comes to reporting news and traffic. Talk about discrimination!

That is not a major Hispanic market. Nor is Philly, where they also filpped one to Spanish. In the top Hispanic markets, they have not done anything. They dropped Denver, and have just changed format in Miami in an attempt to achieve some kind of success.

Well, in the last few weeks they have fired the WMGE PD and changed formats, so obviously they are unhappy with the staiton.

As long as they play reggaeton...it will continue to tank. Who in South Florida listens to it?

It changed from reggaetón based to Spanish CHR (which includes some crossover regaeton) two weeks ago.

I'll give em a listen to see how they develop....but it seems everytime I do I hear reggaeton.

Hopefully they can turn it around.

I am speaking out and giving my opinion because they FIRED all the decent talent they had includung me! the chick the is doing my old shift sucks! I am a much better reporter and have a hell of a lot more experience the she does. All the men that have talk show's are syndicated! what you see on their website are the people whom edit the news from AP and NEWS/GEN If you listen to WIOD you will here mostly women and I disagree with that line of thinking and programming in this market. Last time I checked I think after 23 years of on air experience I can faithfully say I am better than they are. As far as I am conserned it's their loss. Dude they fired all the men/named personalities that were their for 20 years! just for a female voice? that is NOT relative! It's discrimination and the EEOC agree's.

One more thing: It's typical South Florida: If your NOT a women, spanish, pregnant, or some minority the professional type jobs in and out of radio are gone. All that leaves is retail, manual labor work, construction, ETC... Is that fair? Let's tell the truth: South Florida employers are to picky on whom they hire: I had Broward County Public Schools tell me that my degree was too old but then Pine Crest hired me? Makes no sence?

Dude,

You sound like a bitter ex girlfriend. Last time I checked, WIOD has several male voices. Dave LaMont in the AM. He always has 1 of 2 male voices on that show, Aron Bender & Randy Lantz & if one is on in the morning the other is on in the PM. Jorge Sedano works @ WIOD doing HEAT stuff & does the Sports for the AM Show. In PM News blocks I hear, Manny Munoz still doing stories.

Get over it. You say you are & have moved on, but brother actions speak louder than words. The must've fired you for some other reason b/c it obviously isn't b/c the fired ALL MALE VOICES. Anyone who listens to their station can figure that out. CC has fired people for many reasons (cutting costs, etc...), but your claims seem somewhat outrageous.

Do us all a favor & keep your posts about the topics at hand. Not the rundown of whatever conspiracy theories you might think happend to you over there.

If you're that good, you should find work easily.... shouldn't you?

WIOD - a once "heritage" news-talk station - seems to have gone downhill in recent years, all in the pursuit of money.

I know they canned Larry King's syndicated show during the 90s. Really wise.

Now they have only one locally-produced and local-focused show.

So to hear local news and talk, you're pretty much out of luck in a city as big as Miami.

Everything else comes from satellite. So it's nearly an automated station with local news headlines and outsourced traffic reports from some casino.

Fill up your programming with syndicated shows. Wise use for a "city grade" signal.

Uh, Don, it's probably not a good idea align yourself with George Sheldon's posts.

Not sure you are accurate about Larry King. I think he left the show to devote full time to his CNN gig. That was a couple of owners ago...in fact the same people, Cox, who put together that great all live and local line up you speak wistfully about, replaced Kings slot with replays Don and Mike. I think it was CC who brought in Coast To Coast, a program that's done very well in South Florida.

I don't think the traffic is outsourced, in fact it is produced in WIOD newsroom. Also, like the newsroom, it's 24/7. And heaven help them if they are automated, that would mean they'd be using that awful Prophet system.

That being said, Don, when you get down to it, we really are in agreement in a lot of areas. The difference is this: my impression is you think a local show is in and of itself superior to a syndicated show, and that a station clearly serves its community better by having a local show. I just can't 100% agree with you on that. 850 WFTL came on with a huge signal, big news department and all local programming, and fairly extensive marketing campaign...a little more than a year later it blew the local news and programming out. No one was listened. There weren't even little signs of life. How can a station be serving its community when no one is listening? I am not being flippant, I ask you this in all honesty and seriousness.

WIOD no longer has a 24 hour newsroom. At least on the weekends. Last time I listened, they were running some sort of unbranded newscast...all national news....and the exact same thing ran on WINZ. I'm assuming it's a Clear Channel thing. They run some local news on the weekend, but it's definitely not 24/7 anymore.
