Winter/off-season Eskip! 1/9/2017

First opening of the year...and first ever in winter. All relogs, sadly. All times PT.

1:30PM - 95.7 fades up w/ "One Headlight" The Wallflowers, not // KJR or KLTW, over Walla Walla for a brief period
1:37PM - 88.3 KNAI Phoenix, AZ; Regional Mexican music // 96.3 KRCW Royal City (same network). Relog, 22.5KW at 1013 miles.
1:42PM - 93.3 KDKB Mesa, AZ; fadeup with Cage the Elephant's "Trouble" // playlist. Relog, 100KW at 1021 miles.
1:45PM - More flaky fadeups - 88.7 classical, 93.7 top 40 (likely KRQQ). My local 93.7 translator is *off*! Open for now...it better be this way by the real Es season in May/June/July. So many opportunities on this channel that I couldn't get in western WA.
1:50PM - 95.9 KKLD Cottonwood, AZ; fadeup with mention of "lost dogs in the Prescott-Cottonwood area." Relog, 21KW at 934 miles.
1:53PM - 95.5 KWNR Las Vegas, NV; weak fadeup with country, ID "95.5 the Bull." Relog, 100KW at 774 miles.
2:03PM - Last fadeup with a Hot AC on 93.1...likely KLJZ Yuma.

Not a great opening, but a sign of a wonderful summer perhaps? 2016 was awful for FM Es, I am hoping 2017 will deliver in the west. Didn't have one opening that went above 105 mhz last year, and surely no 2-meter MUF.

I was installing a TV antenna this afternoon and was looking at Mingus Mtn, where KKLD and
many other radio and television stations broadcast from. The weather was high, thick clouds
with westerly winds. The sunshine was weak. Temps in Prescott were in the mid 50's and in
the low 40's atop Mingus Mtn. The Phoenix area also experienced thick, high clouds much of
the day........

Weather conditions are not a factor in E Skip.

I used to think that was the case way back when I first experienced it on analog TV and I thought it was hot summer weather.

Congrats on your catches, Crainbebo!

I don't think even the radio experts know exactly why there's a mini Sporadic E season in the northern hemisphere in winter.
