Crazy Winter Book: http://www.radio-info.com/content/arbitron.php?market=052 Big losers are JYE and GRF... winners EDG, WGR, and YRK. Surprising to see KB almost to a 2-share.
It would be interesting to see what the 25-54 numbers look like. More interesting if Buffalo was a PPM market and, like Philadelphia, there were pronounced discrepancies. Philly's rock stations are crowing about FINALLY getting the respect they deserve by way of PPM measurement.

You wonder if KB benefitted (duh!) by cutting Leslie Marshall loose and having a stronger, more consistent daytime line-up in place with press, Miller, Schultz and Rhodes.

Reviewing the obvious:

WBEN, off it's October "perfect storm" Fall book, although up from last Winter, so there's something positive about its performance.

WYRK is a blowtorch, even though it's down from last Winter.

WGR is riding the Sabres wave (and hoping the Rangers don't pull an upset.) You'd like to see just where the strength is for WGR, very likely 7-Midnight.

Can't imagine what happened to normally strong WJYE and WGRF. Both stations are down nearly two shares, Fall to Winter (yes, I know it's "apples to oranges.") But both are down Winter to Winter: WJYE down 2.5, and WGRF down 1.9. That's a surprise for two very well-programmed stations.

Star is off a tick from Fall, but up from last Winter and very consistent. It's a good AC station with a strong, if unspectacular, morning show that Women seem to like.

Could it be WJYE was hit hard by WHTT, which became more AC?

Looks like the Lake picked up some listeners. Did they come from WGRF or WHTT? I'd suspect all the FM's, and the AC's in particular, do very well in "at work" listening.

Jack looks surprisingly consistent.

Wild/Z is up and the WWWS Soul Train rolls on.

WBLK is up from Fall but down 2 from last Winter. Sampling?

The Buffalo 12+ numbers are only a snapshot, but interesting nonetheless.

If nothing else, these numbers should perk up the activity on our board.

Rock Erode

A few first impressions:

97-Rock did not have a good winter. Their own running mates - The Edge - may be hurting them more than anybody else.

WGR wishes that Versus would carry ALL the Sabres games. Radio listening has to spike when those dolts from NYC are on TV.

WJYE is reaping the results of cost-cutting during the final stages of the CBS/Infinity Era. Joe Chille's next contract negotiation won't be any fun, and Mike McQueen was apparently NOT overpaid.

KB is showing signs of life - perhaps at the expense of WBEN.

I'd love to see how the Public Broadcasting stations are doing.

Dropping Leslie Marshall may be one reason KB got a 1.7. A more important reason might be WHLD dropping Progressive Talk/Air America in December and now KB has the Prog Talk audience all to themselves. They also got to include Randi Rhodes in their lineup. It's quite clear now that if you if you're doing Prog Talk in any market, you must include Jones' Stephanie Miller & Ed Schultz(also, Bill Press in the morning). All AA, all the time hasn't worked. WROC has an identical daytime lineup in Rochester - it will be interesting to see how they do.

Also interesting that WECK shows up with a 1.1 with their Classic Country format(tied with WXRL). While their audience was larger with Nostalgia, does this format give WECK better demos and more sales revenue in the long run? Just curious.

One sidelight I've noticed - once again, WJJL continues to get a zero since they abandoned their Niagara Falls base. Lockport's WLVL gets a 0.6(about normal for them) - WJJL used to get similar numbers out of The Falls. Even being the only golden oldies station left in the market, their audience is to small to measure. Never forget your base.

Also, from the bottom of the barrel, WHLD is a no show this book with Gospel(& Democracy Now) and sister station WBBF is also a no show in their first book as the first All Hispanic station in Buffalo.

Actually, WJJL isn't at the bottom of the barrel - they're below the barrel.

Analyzing the ratings based on 12+ numbers is a lot like diagnosing a person's chest pains by taking his temperature, wouldn't you say.

What do the 25-54's look like... as if they'll ever appear on this board. Particularly perplexing are WGRF and WJYE. Both stations look like they took a beating within in their target demos.
