Winter ratings

rodney it looks like lot of stations sucked. did any of them suck enough to flip formats?

Where have you been sir. In the fall book brought plenty of changes due to stations sucking. Two stations sucked so bad in the fall book, 99x and Eagle 106 that they just flipped. Also new morning shows galore and only one delivered.

Looking at mornings 18 - 34 TRG is in 4th one behind Bert despite being on the weaker signal and not being on the air for the first three weeks and people still discovering them well into March. One other thought would it be out of place o be Steve on mid-days at Rock 100.5. Erin is pretty lame and doesn't seem to be evolving. She says the same things over and over again. I now see Axel will be cranking up Sunday afternoons again for the old American Pie now Cocktail Cove giving the station much eed exposure this summer. That station needs to heavily promote all summer and be everywhere they can.

It looks like the River beat sister B98.5, which appears to be a shock. I wonder how much of an effect True Oldies 106.7 will have on the River as time goes along.

As for the Q100 beating Star...the move occured mid-book, so it will take some more time before the effects are truly felt. Although it looks like Lite 94.1 will be here sooner than you think.

And now a look at the CC stations...and WGST's amazing recovery. Highest ratings in years.

96.7 is in the ratings for the first time, beating WAOK. As for the Bull...again, give it some time before the effects of the Kicks/Eagle blowout are felt.

The station that appears next to go from what I see (and again...I have zero experience with how the radio industry works, I am just applying common sense here) is WJZZ. Worst ratings in years.

Any station flip will usually generate lower ratings, hence TrueOldies having a lower rating than its predecessor. I still won't be surprised if it goes any lower.

Kicks is managing quite well as a country station despite being number 7 on the list, and I hope they still do well or even better.

CC stations have been very bad here since 94.9 switched to country. 94.9 used to be their highest rated radio station in 2006 during that time before new inept management brought a plague that wiped out any good that was in them. It looks like what goes around comes around.

As for the River beating 98.5, it's really not by much if you look at the latest ratings although 98.5 was down substantially from winter of 07. Christmas music did make them popular for a while but it looks like some people are starting to get the message of how uninteresting 98.5 is. Some who still listen to them have no choice because there's no AC stations left or they are just still too naive to even listen to other music. And of course, there are some out there who would give up listening to their spouse in order to listen to 98.5. That will change when S & V comes on the air in July. S & V sounds more like your favorite TV show on your most hated TV channel.

Overall, if you own an Urban AC/Hip Hop station, there's no better place to be than here.

Random observations:

What's up with Patron and La Raza? Nice share pop, but #1 and #2 TSL of 10-12 hours per week? ::) Do Latinos really consume that much radio? ::) Or are they fighting it out for el numero uno estacion para escuchar al trabajo? Or is this the old "arrow-down-the-diary" effect? I noticed that all of the big TSLs were urban and Latino...supposedly the formats where PPMs really bring out the truth. Although Viva continues to fade in share.

River: hot. B98.5: Maybe Fall was a Christmas pop and they're back to normal.

At CC, kinda sad that Project, Bull, and WGST all have a 2.1 share...only 1/10th more than Patron . WGST needed that (hey-when was the last time they were the top-rated station in The Building of Death?)...we'll see how Bull does next book since Kicks is hurting and Eagle is gone. Project is looking bad with Rock100.5 coming on strong for 1/10th the wattage. Heck, Buzz on 105.3 was pulling more share than Project Buzzkill.

Dave continues to molder (ditto comments about Project). Is it too early to get out the format wheel for Dave and maybe Project? ???

Rodney,
How serious are the Star94/790 Lincoln Financial talks for sale?
Rumors are that with Big Leagues St. Louis operation floundering they need all the cash they can get from 790 which is again bludgeoned in the ratings.
Do you expect any major changes?
I wonder what the real number for the Afternoon Saloon portion of drive time is. You would ahve to take out the 3pm hour of the Stews. I can't imagine that is going very well.

I wonder how Jordan Graye on B98.5 is doing versus her archrival, Kate McCartney on The River.

I realize they're in different dayparts. But people have told me that those two really don't like each other. I hear they never speak to each other, only to their audience.

Cox official position on this situation is that it is an "inner conflict" and would prefer that the two parties not comment on the situation.

The Winter book was not kind to Smooth Jazz stations, except in Baltimore, which scored extremely well.

The True Oldies format will be interesting to watch. After being around several years, but only on small stations, Scott Shannon's channel is being placed by Citadel in several major cities. The format in D.C. includes Imus in the Morning, True Oldies all day. I like the music mix, but I am really not sure it will work in major markets.

I think it's the road Citadel is starting to head down. More turn-key satellite format stations will pop up in their company as they try to squeeze costs.

how did rock 100, not just trg do. did they beat 99x's ratings? r they beating 12 million $?

AND loose ratings, revenue and fewer suckers buy stock thinking it's bottomed-out. I venture to guess Citadel will be gone in 36 months.

During most of the winter book 106.7 was country NOT True Oldies. The next book will see higher numbers. The equipment for the people meters are in and and you will most likely see rating changes all over the place once that change takes place.

That said did the Cleetus show make up any ground from its Feb numbers - pull any more before Rhubarb was off ?

I predict that 1160 AM will be #1 next time.

Oh that's a good one Roddy! ;D They had the chance when it was MOYL and you could hear it. I don't know what's happened to the signal but it sure is crappy now.

Actually Roddy, my money is on the Dickey frequencies (Supertalk 1230/1340) to top the Atlanta ratings charts the next time around. 1160 AM will come in a close second.

I think it'll be WGUN 1010. After all, they are 50,000 watts...unless they get beaten by WGST.
