Winter Ratings

KDKA back as #1 in 12+ 8.5 to 9.3 (fall to winter). Standards big in winter, WJAS 3.4 to 4.5. Pens were big for X. ESPN huge book in all shows. KISS goes up big. 'RRK down.

What really surprised me is 'DVE's low showing despite the Steelers' Super Bowl run. And it looks as though country's hitting another down time.

That is low for DVE standards, yet it would be dream numbers for just about any other rock/classic rock station in the nation!

I noticed country is down in most of the markets released so far. This could be a down cycle for the format.

Actually 'DVE is up for the most part in the Men 25-54 Demo. That's why 12+ doesn't mean much. Ranker positions don't fluctuate that much given some big shares here even when those shares drop. 'DVE is a 19.7 in men up from a year ago 18.7 and up from the fall at 19.0.
Ranker positions that did move were The X from 4th to 3rd. Y from 5th to 4th and ESPN from 10th to 5th.

The only major daypart 'DVE went down in year to year was PM drive 18.3 to 17.5. The X went 6.2 to 8.1 and ESPN went 4.3 with Madden a year ago to 6.7 this Winter with The Drive.

the reports of the wjas demise appear to be greatly overblown. give them credit, they are a player. couple that with wshh beating up on their weakened competition and you have "renda the genius." well, the credit should go to an underpaid staff who just do their jobs.....and are under appreciated......would like an opinion on the big winners and losers of the winter book...california

You would have to say Renda.... The X... and certainly ESPN which some here thought died because one guy was fired, and of course 'DVE which is still one hell of a station!

WJAS is hanging by a thread because they can't sell the audience they have. The business they get is mostly a function of the accounts Bogut and Cardille have had for years. It is not a healthy situation for them.

WJAS does have new accounts, but it is limited at their target audience. They seem to have a few different one's on there from when I last listened to them. With where they are now I don't think Renda is doing too bad in the ratings, could be better yes but not bad at all for no marketing and just letting the stations coast along.

From talking to a close friend of mine tonight who works there, california is right...... Renda employees are very underpaid for numerous positions. Even when their people deserve it the people who put in long hours get nothing in return year after year. I'd hate to see that ship's crew revolt someday!

WJAS is sounding a lot like WDUV except more adult standards and shockingly------CNN news on the hour and weather overnights. How do they do that? OMG!

I am surprised that nobody is mentioning the fact KDKA now has live, local programming on in the evening instead of pre-recorded syndicated shows.

As for ESPN, I believe this is their best book ever. Part of that has to be attributed to the fact Pittsburgh teams are doing so well, but I've noticed "The Drive" is receiving less criticism than before.

The show may not be perfect, but it seems to be jelling better and perhaps gaining a following.

The whole reason Gene Romano put Pauslen first on 970 then on nights at DVE was because he didn't want to compete against him. At 970 and later at 93.7 Scott had nothing around him, so the shows gained no following. But you put him in the middle of an ESPN plus Stan and Guy mix, and whaddya know, he gets some numbers..... and takes them from DVE.

Gene's biggest issue right now is the DVE listeners Madden is taking away. He can't do much about 1250, but when the "enemy" is in the building, there has to be a better way.

Gene's biggest issue right now is making sure that the bean counters in Boston don't gut his baby. He's gone to the mat more than once in the last year for the place and might just be in survival mode right now. CC is in worse shape than many realize.

Not that I'd want to see it happen, but they could go almost jockless on 3WS and it probably wouldn't make much of a diference. They might be the sacrificial lamb to keep DVE's big payroll intact.

Cox in Tampa does Classic Hits with only 2 jocks and 80's with VT'ing people from another station.

just how bad is radio these days? there seem to be so many radio outlets in trouble...the mighty and the meek. with the elimination of talent, why even bother. i can listen to mp3's, cds or satelite. i want a personality to hang on to. somebody give me an evaluation of the crisis in more detail. who is in the biggest trouble in the pittsburgh market? (or is it an across the board hurt?) california

All the big companies paid too much for all the stations they bought. The projections to pay for the stations were based on absurd increases in sales, which never happened, so now they are drowning in debt. Same story everywhere.
