Winter sports on the radio

It's getting close to the time of jump balls and puck drops, so here is a rundown of who is airing basketball and hockey on local airwaves:

We'll start with the Dan Gilbert sports empire - the Cavaliers will be on longtime flagships WTAM 1100/106.9 and WMMS 100.7, erstwhile Akron affiliate WAKR 1590/93.5, Canton's WHBC 1480, and WLEC 1450/93.5 in Sandusky/Vacationland with Tim Alcorn and former Cav Jim Chones on the call, Spanish broadcasts will be on WNZN 89.1 (which targets the Vacationland region), with announcer Rafael Hernandez Brito. On the TV side, Bally Sports Ohio will have the bulk of the games with John Micheal (lead announcer), Cavs icon Austin Carr (analyst) Serena Winters (sidelines), Jeff Phelps and former Cav Campy Russell (pregame/halftime/postgame) as the broadcast team

The Cavs' G League team - the Charge - will be on WARF 1350 The Gambler (bumped to WAKS 96.5 HD2/106.1 FM in case of conflicts) with Scott Zurella in the booth.

Monsters hockey will also be on 1350 (with a scattering of simulcasts on Ball Sports Great Lakes) with Tony Brown as the announcer

College hoops wise, THE Ohio State Buckeyes will be on longtime Cleveland home WKNR 850, along with WAKR, WHBC, and WLEC, with Paul Keels and Ron Stokes on the call. The CSU Vikings will be on WARF (with some conflicted games sliding over to WTAM), featuring Al Pawlowski at the mike.

And finally, WEOL 930/100.3 in Elyria/Lorain usually has high school basketball broadcasts for teams from that neck of the woods

I thought Bally Sports Ohio - back when it was Fox Sports - carried the Columbus hockey games on one of the channels up here, but I could be mistaken. There were so many sports channels back when I had cable that it was hard to keep track.

Radio-wise, they're probably geo-blocked, so you'd have to get some kind of streaming option to just listen to the games if they're out of market. I sprang for an NFL+ subscription (it's only $5/month) to get the Bengals games, and the only ones I can't watch on TV through Paramount+ are the nighttime games, since CBS typically carries the daytime matches. Although, with both the Browns and the Bengals playing at 1:00 this Sunday, it'd be interesting to see which game my Detroit-geo-located internet gives me, but I'm working all day, so I can simply turn on the NFL app and watch that game directly.

Bally does indeed still have the Blue Jackets, and they air in Cleveland, though if there's a conflict with the Cavs, the Jackets slide over to Bally Sports Ohio Extra, which basically simulcasts BSO and exists specifically to be a conflict backup channel

So for all intents and purposes there are 3 Bally Sports stations in town - Great Lakes, Ohio and Ohio Extra

WWOW in Conneaut still carries the Jackets, for those far enough northeast to hear it. I believe the only conflicts would be with Conneaut Spartans football and boys basketball.
It would be nice if the Jackets and the NHL were able to fix their territorial issues in northeast Ohio. They can be seen all along the lakeshore to the Pa line as well as in Akron and then west and southwest of there, but the Penguins block them out of Canton, New Philly and Youngstown even though their network barely is seen in Ohio. So my in-laws in Conneaut, as far from Columbus as you can get and still be in the state, can see the Jackets while people 100 or more miles closer to Columbus cannot.
