Winter Storm Carson...Who do you trust?

As I type this, New Britain and Hartford (the whole state, really!) are being pounded on by Winter Storm Carson. Who do you turn to in times like this? Channel 3 just had a reporter in Manchester with a "pretty" pink ruler (shows up good though!) and Scot Haney? Well, I'll leave that one alone, thank you! Channel 8 and 30 don't seem to be going as far overboard and The Weather Channel was also showing Hartford a little while ago.
______________

Boston's four network affils all brought in their weekday morning
anchors and entire weather deptartements. Massive wall-to-wall coverage
which will shift to scrolls and slide updates once networks'
sports programming kicks in the afternoon. NECN has also been
on with extensive coverage, but infomercials will take over later.

So didn't WWLP in Springfield.

And I think WFSB is the only station who names their winter storms out of anyone.

I can imagine the works were brought out on WPRI and WJAR in Providence as well.

I didn't even know winter storms have names like hurricanes.

When did they start naming winter storms? If they actually do, who came up with "Carson"?

I didn't realize we were naming storms now.
How long do I have to wait for Winter Storm Garrett?

Just for the info..., WFSB makes up these winter storm names. They are not sactioned by or recognized by anyone else, especially the NWS.

It is as hokey as naming summer thunderstorms or a flood. Imagine, "Watch out for Thunderstorm Bob now moving into Hartford" or "Flood George caused damage in the Ct River Valley". How stupid is that.

Why they make up names for weather events that NO ONE ELSE recognizes is very bizzare and I think is misleading to the public.

Don't Panic..., Winter Storm Carson is almost over! PLEEEEASE..., spare us the dramatics!

WFSB in Hartford did. They always have.
I think they think it's "cute".

Winter Storm Names , Only on WFSB

WFSB is the only station which names Winter Storms.
They think it's cute apparently.

At the rate they've been coming this year, I'd say sometime in mid-May at the earliest. Still gotta go through D, E and F first. :)

Thank you for pointing this out...I kept wondering why he was referring to the so-called "Blizzard of '06" by name!!

Why Channel 3 WFSB Names Major Winter Storms

Every year I see a post about WFSB naming winter storms. People should know by now that Channel 3 has been doing it for a very long time. Channel 3 started naming storms in the early 1970s from reading what it said on wfsb.com a few years ago. It was one of their old weather guys they had back in the 70s. Naming winter storms I think makes Channel 3 stand out from 8 and 30. If during hurricane season they can name hurricanes why can’t we in New England name Nor’ Easters. Is it that big a deal if Channel 3 does. Well I like the idea. This is just my opinion. I think other stations in New England should do the same.

Here's the list of names we'll give to big storms this winter:
Armand
Beverly
Carson
Doreen (Next Major Winter Storm Name)
Edan
Francesca
Garth
Heather
Ike
Jocelyn
Kirk
Larissa
Mac
Nadine

Re: Why Channel 3 WFSB Names Major Winter Storms

It wasn't until this very message board did I realize that not one other station named these things. Does any other station refer to the massive Blizzard of 1978 as Blizzard Larry? That's what I've heard for years. As for the names of these storms, none of those names seem to ring true to any on-air employee, past or present, of WFSB-TV/DT. Otherwise, it'd have to be:

Al (Terzi)
Bruce (Deprest)
Charlie (Bagley-Longtime weatherman for years past)
Dan (Kain), Dennis (House), Denise (D'Acenzo), Diana (Rocco), Dawn (Hasbrouk)
Eric (Parker)
F
Gayle (King-gone but still Oprah's best friend)
Hilton (Kaderli-gone but not forgotten)
Irene (O'Connor)
Jamie (Roth)
Kevin (Hogan)
Leon (Collins), Len (Bestoff)
Melissa (Cole), Mark (Dixon), Miles (Muzio-long gone)
N
Oprah (Winfrey-Very popular with most channel 3 viewers)

It makes them stand out as a pretty weenie station!
I think giving storms names is hokey.

In this storm, Channel 8 and 30 stood way out past 3, just like in the past. HOWEVER, with that said, Channel 3 still has the best online doppler radar.

WTNH HAD BEST COVERAGE IN CT

WTNH by far had the best live coverage in the state, hands down.

Along with Matt Scott in the studio weather center and the regular storm live shots from the field, WTNH had 2 "real" meteorologists out in the field as well.

On top of that they had the Skymax Mobile Weather Lab which provides live, on the spot weather conditions anywhere it's deployed. Plus it is fed real time nationwide and regional weather conditions by satellite. A complete TV station weather station on wheels. No one else in the Northeast has anything like it.

So impressive that ABC network and GMA said they had to have it on the air on Sunday and ended up doing a network/nationwide live shot with Gil Simmons!

I would rather have a weather report from the Skymax Mobile Weather Lab than a reporter sticking a ruler in snow or a standing on top of a pile somewhere saying "look, it's snowing". Thanks for the news flash.

And as far a 3 goes, Haney's "entertainment" reports from 10 feet out their front door at Constitution Plaza and "naming" and hyping the storm is not the kind of information and coverage from the field that I was looking for.

How did 8 and 30 stand out past 3, what did they do differently? Also I did see The Weather Channel use a report from WFSB.

Gil Simmons dont you have some work to do? Besides just look at the overnights to see who the real winner was in storm coverage. It wasnt 8 or 30.

Re: New England Weather Service?

I 'think' this goes tradition goes back to the times of the "New England Weather Service" which was formerly "Travelers (Insurance Co.) Weather Service." In the 80s and 90s, the service went broadcast, and flip flopped between WTIC-TV/AM/FM and WFSB. If I'm not mistaken, WFSB either absorbed the weather service, or they severed ties. I think they still provide weather for WTIC-AM.

Re: Who I trust

In terms of the cold, hard facts, without a doubt, Dr. Mel Goldstein, professor emeritus of meteorology, is the most skilled forecaster in the state. He's also a great human being, and likely one of the greatest weather historians in the country - he knows his stuff like few others. He performs a tremendous duty to WTNH/8 and the people of Connecticut.

I would say that Chief Meteorologist Brad Field of WVIT/30 comes in at a close second. He also is well-versed in the climatology of the area. Which reminds me, his former colleague meteorologist Art Horn was also one of the best in the discipline of local climatology.

While many would disagree with me, Geoff Fox comes in third place. He is a science guru, has flown as a guest with NASA, the Air Force, he co-hosted science shows for several cable networks, and even was a regular fill-in weather correspondent for Spencer Christon on Good Morning America during the 80s and 90s. While Geoff occasionally goofs around, and tends to tell some jokes, he is a brilliant man, and deserves to be credited. Him and Dr. Mel have nearly a half century, if not more, of combined experience in forecasting Connecticut weather.

After them, it's a toss up. Bruce DePrest is next in line for the most experience. But NBC30 has quite the team with very thorough, and highly trained meteorologist, Bob Maxon, Garett Argianis and newcomer John DiPasquale.

For some reason, WTNH's Gill Simmons and Matt Scott, as well as WFSB's Scott Haney border more closer toward 'entertainer' than forecaster.

However, I have no doubt that WFSB's Mark Dixon and Melissa Cole will eventually rise to the top. They have a lot of potential, and will be making a name for themselves.

I don't get to see WTNH weekend forecaster Syd/Sid? Stark often enough to comment. He seems like he knows his stuff, but that's all I can say.

I'm not too crazy about the FOX61 weather team. It was much better when they were affiliated with the New England Weather Service, and had such meteorologists as Joe Furey, Bob Cox, and Kevin Lemanowicz.

just some thoughts...

Re: New England Weather Service?

They provide forecasts for both WTIC-AM 1080 and WTIC-FM 96.5 of Hartford. The N.E.W.S. appeared on channel 61 and then channel 3 for a time. That's the group which uses Joe Furey and Bob Cox, et al.
______________
