WINTER STORM COVERAGE

We've been up here (Columbus) doing the house-hunting thing this week and got caught in this winter storm. I've listened extensively to WTVN 610 AM. They seemed to have a decent handle on things. Anyone care to weigh in on thoughts about WTVN and/or other stations' coverage of this storm?

BTW...my wife and I are relocating to Columbus in April from Texas. If you feel the need to flame, please do so with the ignorant and unlearned in mind. ;D ;D ;D

I made the opposite move. Columbus to Texas. Not knowing where in Texas you are moving from, the best comparison I can tell you is that WTVN's severe weather coverage will be very simular to KTRH in Houston. Same ownership, and the pretty much the same importance placed on severe weather coverage. Except they (KRTH) went into panic mode in January when there was a thin layer of ice, and they were worried about Houston drivers in inclement weather. Well we Houstonians don't need severe weather to drive bad, it's in our nature. Good Luck in Columbus.

I do forecasts for a weather company and I have been very jealous of Texas lately...high of 61 this weekend?!?!?!? Maybe you can buy my house cause I'm thinking about joining Jerrbud pretty soon.
(BTW-J, hope all is well.)

WTVN recently affiliated with WBNS-tv for weather reports which as a hometown boy makes me cringe. I am really tired of the meteorologists MILKING everything they can out of anything they can. I once saw Ganahl at WCMH-tv taking a live phone call from a woman in a trailer park during a tornado warning. Tacky.
Now I can watch them milk it on tv and hear the same people pulling the radio udders.

BTW-if you're coming up here to be a pd, hire me! I'm working as a Realtor and all the blasted Texas people are buying houses without me!

Are you talking about on-air work or the behind-the-scenes forecasting? Are you hiring?

You may just want to check with Jerrbud. If he's in Houston, the humidity will knock your feet out from under you in the summers. I know what it's like up in East Texas (Tyler/Longview) and I don't envy the costal areas at all. It's really thick down in the Rio Grande Valley.

Actually, we're coming to Columbus because my wife's employer is relocating us. I wish it was because I was in radio full-time. Sorry.

We're making the move to Columbus from the Tyler/Longview area. The weather coverage I'm most accustomed to is KTBB/Tyler (www.ktbb.com). I'm not surprised about KTRH going in to full panic mode over a thin sheen of ice. I'm sure that KTBB would be treating the situation with care, too...although I'm not sure they would be in panic mode.

In reference to bad Houston driving, I heard all my life about how bad it was. The first time I was in it, I came back and told people I'd rather drive Houston than Dallas ANY day.

Currently in the great state of Texas, I'm doing forcasts for KSIX, KROO, KNELam/fm,KLXK.
They ALL make me jealous.
PS
Jerrbud,
I hate you very much!
Love,
Your Radioboy989

LOL!!!!!!!

clear channel and wtvn take their fair share of knocks in here, but let me say i felt that wtvn did a stellar job of covering the winter storm..i listened for the better part of 3 days during the storm--kudos to Joel Riley in particular

A helluva lot better than on a Christmas Day a few years ago, when TVN blithely pumped out talk-free Christmas music...virtually ignoring one of the biggest ice storms ever and its consequences. Electricity was out in big chunks of the metro, and many thousands were seeking shelter as TVN played its wall-to-wall Christmas music. I guess Full Service doesn't apply when its inconvenient. Or maybe the GSA was filling in for the usual staff that day.

I appreciate the information and the well wishes!

We have an offer submitted on a house and should hopefully know something soon. It is the one that had everything we said we wanted and fell comfortably within our price point. If something happens and this house falls through, I possibly will be in touch. Thanks again for the tip!
