Winter Wonderland

The holidays are over, Christmas "sticker shock" is past, KB is history, and lib-talk is going through its growing pains. In other words, life is getting back to normal.

As I sit huddled in my polar fleece, cringing every time the furnace kicks on because I know that it emphasizes the "F" in "NFG", a few questions come to mind...

What happened to Stern's listeners? Did they all get Sirius for Christmas, or pick up a post-holiday deal, and abandon terrestrial radio for satellite?

If not, who are they listening to now? Norton & Co.? Shredd & Ragan? Dale & Clay? Janet & Nick? Howard Simon? Joe & CJ? Bill & Gail? Jack "Playing What We Want"?

Speaking of Jack, will the loss of Stern help or hurt their numbers? Does the "more music morning show" mean a more consistent sound that keeps people listening longer since Stern isn't around to interrupt the flow, or does losing Stern mean that fewer people turn Jack on in the first place?

If you got satellite for Christmas, is it as cool now as it was the first week you owned it? Or, is it 200 channels of the same crap without any local content?

Since radio geeks tend to be ahead of the curve when it comes to matters like this, I thought this was the appropriate place to pose these questions.

good topic

After being introduced to a friends' Sirius radio in April 2005, I had to buy one to follow Stern to Sirius. I never considered myself to be a die-hard fan of his until now. The show is just too darn funny. I listen from the moment I get up in the AM until I hit the door at work. It used to be just 15-20 in the car when he was on 92.9.

The Sirius radios are really cool--technology wise. A great gadget if there ever was one. I must admit that the channel lineup is so deep that I haven't even begun to scratch the surface. And I'll admit that there's plenty of channels that I'll probably NEVER even bother with.

Favorite channels other than "Howard 100" include; "Disorder" (AAA-like), NFL Radio, CBC-3, "Outlaw Country", First Wave (70's-80's New Wave) and the guilty pleasure of "Totally 70's". I also enjoy terrestrial radio on Sirius; Country WSM-AM from Nashville.

As far as JACK-FM goes I would think that they are going to lose a lot of audience in the mornings. While a few might appreciate the lack of banter, I'm sure the formula of morning radio is hard for some to live without. I'm wondering if Shredd & Ragan will get a slight bump from Howard's absence?

Those are my opening thoughts........

And here's the post for those who might be disinterested or too damn lazy to click the link (can't imagine who that might be, but WTH) from the Programming Board:

The Hot AC station in our market just recently dumped there (sic) breakfast show (the weekend before the start of the first book period). They are now searching for a replacement. However, in the meantime they are playing around 10 tracks an hour and doing time/temp & traffic. Those of us at work, including myself, think that what they are on the right track with the more music policy, as no-one else does it. I kind of hope they at least see this through until the end of the survey (in around 4 weeks), to see if it picked up listeners. Considering it isn't targeted at me, I find myself listening alot, because if I wanted talk, I would listen to the station I work for.

My question is, does the more music appoach work? What are the pro's and con's?

In Buffalo, there's plenty of yapping going on in morning drive, even though Howard's history on 92.9. The political talk and Bauerle can't come close to what Howard offered. WGR has some panache (in the flambouyant sense of the word) but after the wheat is separated from the chaff, Shredd & Ragan and Norton & Lederman should come out ahead. If they don't go up a share or two in their target demos, something's wrong. However, it's not realistic to think 103.3 and 97 are destined to pick up all of Howard's numbers.

As to what might happen to the listeners who once tuned in to Danny on KB and the MOYL on WECK, I think CHWO-AM will benefit more than any other station. Understandably, there are posters who believe WHTT will pick up some shares but in my perspective, there's something about the WHTT morning show that seems incongruent with what was heard on WECK and KB.

Jack might have some impact on stations like Star, 97 Rock and WHTT, but it doesn't appear that it's the kind of "at work" radio station you're apt to hear in a store, given its erratic music sets where AC-DC is prone to pop up after Sade.

work place vs. mini Marts:

>Jack might have some impact on stations like Star, 97 Rock and WHTT,

you're apt to hear in a store, given its erratic music sets where
AC-DC is prone to pop up after Sade.
[To the above: Very True. THat is the appeal and annoying, at the same time].

>>....whether it is legal or not,(another discussion all together)to
play a radio at a 7-11,noco, etc..i have noticed JACK is almost always
the station of choice: versus a Store ( stores, usually locally
owned will split between star and wjye). However, pizzeria's
and sub shops, usually will have on 97, or the edge.

Some of the time, the edge (103.3)and, to a degree 97Rock,
may have difficulty with being on at a store/gas station is due to content..hell you or i, dont care, and in fact find it to be
funny or great radio...However, the casual customer, or a mom
with kids doesnt want to hear about strippers, "girls gone wild",
or 4:20/alcohol references..or dont care, (on 103.3) that a semi-obscure
band is going to be in town next month. If the customers dont want to hear it..
why should the place of business "tolerate" it..even if they do like
the programming, station's playlist, or on-aire personality.

I've got Dishnetwork, which has Sirus music channels. It's not worth paying for IMHO.
