WIOD OLD TALK SHOW HOSTS, WIOD MUSIC TO TALK TRANSITION

I do vaguely remember Bill Smith & Sandy Payton in a 1-2 punch in 1981-ish on 'IOD.

I read that the very last attempt at music was Mike Reineri's show, but I also remember a guy named Bill McQuage (1986-87-ish), who played some music for afternoon drive, *and* had a trivia game once a week or so for prizes. I won twice....one of the prizes I won was tickets to the Blue Angels, if I recall (I gave them to a co-worker). Oh yeah, the other was a $20 certificate to Sonny's BBQ!

One thing I remember about one show McQuage did....he mentioned that nobody ever plays the tune "Convoy" by C. W. McCall anymore. he wanted people to call to ask if they wanted to hear it; more people said "no" than "yes"!! He played it anyway. He didn't last long, but maybe I coulda won again....!

(Oh yeah, once he wanted to play a phone game of "Polyglot," where you would give a foreign word for the English word he gave. You could pick the language you wanted. Needless to say, many Hispanics called and wanted Spanish! Winners galore....they had to scrap that idea!)

Sorry to ramble.

During the early to mid 70's WIOD was such a great sounding station not quite WNEW but not that far behind, During the 70's Miami was one of the best sounding radio markets in the country.....what happened? I would drive around with the top down and the radio blaring thinking what a great place to live, Wolfie's or the Rascal House and superb radio....it doesn't get any better than this.
Now the radio stinks even Y-100 is just a shell of it's former self and wonderful old Miami Beach is now South Beach. Unless you are rich and beautiful don't even bother going across the Venetian Island or Arthur Godfrey Causeways. One thing I still lust for is the Cuban sandwiches.
