WIOD's Jimmy Cefalo Punks Shirley Phelps Roper

This was great to listen too, hearing this women get told what she is and then hung up on.

Freedom of speech works both ways Ms. Phelps-Doper ;D

If you didn't here this please listen to the podcast posted by DToTheJ.

It will put a smile on your face.

THAT -- was great radio. It's about time someone gave this inbred cult of hatred the disrespect it deserves. Congratulations, Jimmy Cefalo!

A few points:

1) Given the recent WFLA "interview" with Ron Reagan, was Cefalo looking to do something a bit "outrageous?" (at least for him - what he did in my opinion wasn't outrageous).

2) It's not professional to treat a guest in that manner. If he didn't want to do the interview, he should have told the woman PRIOR to her getting on the air. Once she was on the air, I believe he should have gone ahead with the interview and, of course, reserved the right to terminate the interview if things got out of hand. But in this case, she barely got 2 words in.

"Punking" the Westboro Baptists is old hat and cowardly. Cowardly because their message actually manages to offend BOTH sides of the cultural divide, thus there's no risk in getting rude with them. Not to mention that the Westboro rep got everything she wanted out of the encounter, which was publicity.

Perhaps there's something New hat you could suggest. Standing by silently while these vicious monsters disgrace the armed forces and inflict misery on mourners is not an option. And there is nothing remotely courageous or Christian in their actions.

Smedge, I hope you're not the type of person who defends anyone to the right of Attilla the Hun no matter how onerous and uninformed they may be. Not only did Ceffalo do the right thing, he did it as politely as possible under the circumstances. Shirley got better than she deserved. But please feel free to call Jimmy a coward to his face.

Ditto.

There's nothing "courageous" about punking somebody that EVERYBODY disagrees with. Punking a politician would be slightly more daring, since at least half the population would disagree with what you did. You'd have to take a stand and choose a side. Cefalo's stunt will do NOTHING to stop further protests by these nuts. It doesn't even make them uncomfortable. They don't care what you think of them as long as you spell their names correctly.

This is not about their rights or how awful the Westboros are. This is about calling out an old, hackneyed radio crutch -- bravely denouncing something everyone already despises anyway. Next radio will be coming out against ax-murderers and people who dump kittens in the river in a burlap sack. It's as cliched as a 1980's Morning Zoo. Two generations of radio jocks and talk hosts have been doing this to the Westboros for 30 years and guess what? They're still here. A lot of good all that "bravery" did. "Standing by silently" while these idiots parade is the one thing that seems to get to them. Give the cold shoulder a chance.

Interesting to be called "right of Attila the Hun" on this board. Over on the N/T board, they think I'm to the left of Trotsky for my spirited defenses of liberal talk radio. I just don't like hack radio.

Sorry for the mislabeling. Hope the change of pace was refreshing. You may have a point about it being a hackneyed "bit," and that it will do little do discourage these "people," but I just feel they're so awful that criticism of Ceffalo is nit-picking.

Ceffalo has a nice, smooth sound on the air. But he's not very well read on many of the subjects he talks about, yet he is very opinionated. That makes for entertaining (yet sometimes dangerous) talk radio. I guess it fits the "conservative talk radio" moniker, but if you look at WIOD's ratings vs. heritage talk stations in other markets, it's pretty sad.

Face it, WIOD is pretty much the ONLY game in town. And they are still doing poorly in the ratings. Ceffalo is not the cause of that, but he's part of the problem.

So when does he get sued? You know they'll try! ;)

Free speech works both ways so they can't do anything. Plus it'll be hard to make a case against this one.

The Phelps have never been concerned about the viability of a case only their ability to file it and drag an unwilling party into court. Fred was dis-barred for such behavior but his offspring know no limits!
