WIOO Application

Noticed on the FCC Info page that WIOO-1000 has made am application for a power increase to 15000 watts daytime, 2720 watts critical hours non directional on 1000. It also shows their 1010 application as being DOA. With the way that WINS New York booms into this area some nights, their 60 watts wouldn't have done a whole lot.

The 1010 application goes back to the pre-AM to FM translator FCC rule change. With the addition of our translators, 60 watts at night on 1010 became un-needed, since 97.9 covers way more than 60 night-time AM watts would cover. It would also have meant 3 towers, a huge expense. So might as well max out 1000 kHz, non-DA. With 15 kw, we'll cover half the state!!

Would this put a better signal into Lancaster County? I try & listen to WIOO when driving just east of Lancaster but the signal isn't good enough for the average listener (who won't put up with static & nulls). I would think that area would do well with classic country since WIOV has been playing country & consistently top rated since 1968 but is only on the fringe of signals from WIOO, WWSM & WHVR.

Hope that when Morgan Burroughs and the station submitted this application that they had some serious measuremnts on co channel WNTP-990, WVSC-990 and WSID-1010, they could be the ones that'd cause some problems

I was staying in Strasburg a few weeks ago & was surprised WNTP was as strong there as it was. WHYL put in a clearer signal that WIOO. But when I was out in the Carlisle area it was nice to hear WIOO on the FM side as well as 1000 AM.

I really have to wonder about the ROI on this venture. It's still AM and a daytimer as well. The 15kw operation is only two hours after sunrise to two hours before sunset, so in the winter this is about 5 hours 9:30AM to 2:30PM, and the 2.7kw critical hours is not much different that the current 1 kw operation. (approx 3.5db)
Think of the approximate 10 fold increase in the electric bill for this operation. Will there have to be additional cooling for this operation? That will tack on more to electric.
My guess is the primary reason for this power increase is to go after one or more FM translators in the more populated areas towards Harrisburg inside the 15kw 2mv contour.
