WIOV

Let me start by saying that I do not intend for this to be mean spirited just a question/my opinion. Can someone explain to me the appeal of WIOV’s morning show, Uncle Murph and Casey? Having moved back to this area 2 years ago and a fan of country music (among other genres) I was searching for a station other than WXTU. I landed on WIOV and liked the fact they have more music and less of those canned/stupid bits in the AM but I have yet to grasp the appeal of this am show. Casey sounds as if she has never really read a newspaper or actually seen a sporting event (based on the way I have heard news and sports read) and just seems to be in a rush to chat about her next local charity/event. I am guess from what I can glean from the chit chat she is some sort of local icon??
Murph (?) sounds as if he was put with Casey since I honestly do not hear any chemistry. I can not imagine these 2 have been together for an extended time.
I see, based on R and R’s 12+ numbers, that WIOV is #1 which is well and good. But I can not seem to grasp or develop a liking for the morning team. I assume I am not the demo and they are targeting something like woman 24-45ish. I find myself wanting to listen more…just can’t. Can anyone offer any insight? Maybe it is just me.

Murph tends to be funny in such a way that doesn't include potty humor and stupid bits. The man is incredibly intelligent and is funny in so many ways. He knows how to toe the line and just how far to push and I constantly find myself saying, "I CANNOT BELIEVE HE JUST SAID THAT." They are quick jabs that are perfectly placed. Maybe his liners are a bit over your head...

Everyone has a different opinion on what is and isn't funny and I think it's safe to say that Lancaster welcomes these two into their lives with open arms and has for many years.

You mentioned the ratings "success" there. LOL. It's easy to get an 8 share when there is no competition. WIOV is the only country station in the market, so they continue to "win" by default.

a never was- Never said he was not funny, or that they are not welcomed by the listeners, in fact I agree with what you say and I like his one liners. What I said was I did not sense chemistry between two...During their vacation they had a fill in gentleman reading news, sports and weather the in my opinion, the increase in quality was measurable. Again just my opinion and again I am NOT being mean spirited here (as I have seen on so many of these type boards), just my observations.

cadillac-jack- true. Sort of like Q-102 out of Winchester VA or WFRE from Frederick MD I guess.

I see your point Knight and have to admit that when I tuned in and found Murph on vacation that I immediately changed the channel.. I can't comment on the comparison of chemistry since I turned the station as soon as I heard Murph wasn't there.

As far as competition - I think you were referring to IOV vs other stations in Lancaster, despite the genre of music. Granted, Lancaster is small market, but compared to the other genres, I do think IOV is competitive year after year.

I've been away from the area for over 10 years but Casey Allen has been on in the mornings for many years on WIOV. She's been paired with several people in the past, and was on with "Brother Wheems" when I moved away. He had come from FM 97, or at least thats where I remember him from. I believe he had a good chemistry with Casey. As for the new guy Murph, I honestly don't know how good he is. But, to answer your original question, she's been on the air for many years. At one time I knew several of their air staff from country dancing and they were all awesome people, including Casey. Now I'm wondering if she still has the Cooking with Casey cookbooks. ;D

The reference was to country stations in other markets that I have lived in or near that are dominated by one country station. 2 factors I assume, the area is a country hotbed and no competition.
Regardless of my slight dislike of the am team I would rather listen to it that XTU from Phila. I have always preferred the small town stations/markets to the larger ones. Large station play lists are too tight, many canned bits, to much chit chat and those ever lovin live read spots.....not my cup of tea.

I did mornings with Casey for about a year, after Murphy left to try his hand in a small market in western PA, then prior to Murphy's return after I went to Scranton for much more money. I had the misfortune of having the GM (Mitch Carroll) continuously occupying her time while we were on the air in some sort of sick, perverted courtship that made our "show" suffer in quality. At the time, we had direct market competition from Citadel (unlike now) but still managed a 7 share. If you listen to the airchecks on my site, I was able to still put on a compelling show with Casey, even though she was only concerned about her damn cook book [EDIT] Thank God I quit before they drove me nuts.

Murf reminds me of the big radio jocks of the 70's. It's all a character. I did meet him at Reinhold's carnival, think it was the first show. The guy is like Elvis there... everyone knows him, and just wanted to be around. Of course that could have been the biggest gathering of P1's in the county too... He definitely knows how to work a crowd though.

As for WIOV vs WXTU, WIOV's Music selection is terrible. It's the same tired songs that every other station is playing. Country music is a lost format right now. Some artists want to be rockstars, some want to be old hillbillies, some want to be pop stars and there is just no consistency. Country is a hotbed because it's a jack format... it's a little bit of everything.

I turn on a radio to hear new music. Country (and other formats) severely lack it... which is why I listen to a lot of XPN or News.

It is true that the selection of music is not good, but at least they tend to play more of it that XTU.
And I agree 100% on the pop/rock/classic identity issue. I am not a fan of Pop country (ie Faith Hill, Shania, Tim M. etc) I can tolerate the rock/southern styles and I do prefer the 'classic' country sound. But then, that is just me. Male 35-44! :)
If anyone does like Classic Country I always thought Jim London at MZQ in DC did a great show on Sat nights.
Want a wacky music mix? Try WKIK out of Lexington Park MD (south of DC). A crazy and some what likable mix of classics (from big hit's to the not so big hit) to the newer songs as well.

I hired Murphy for a gig in Lousiville years ago, and have to say he is one of the funniest human beings on the planet. I don't get to hear his show there in Central PA, but you should feel blessed to have him as part of your community.

He cheats at racquetball,though.

WIOV is mainly a Lancaster station, what kind of Reading penetration does it have. I know it's a blow torch signal, what are it's positives and negatives? - Good air staff, I know back in the Brill days they had some great promotions and concerts. CJ was right the former GM was nuts. Also (I know more questions) Why Citadel try a local manager then switch operations to Harrisburg?

Does WIOV still do the Long Park Fall Music Fests? They used to go all out to put on an excellent free concert in September/October every year when I lived out there.

Cadillac Man...
If she was wasting her time with Mitch Carroll she has virtually no class. The man's a pig. I guess he snuck outta town and came up to NEPA..where he's left a wake people who would like to see him fall into an open man-hole.

I thought WIOV had a new PD as of last week..yet, today I heard RJ on the air. Whats up with that?

Al Brock started as PD last Wednesday. The previous guy is sticking around to help make the transition.

Question for anyone close to IOV: They were hiring for a mid-day person and Prod. Dir. RJ had started the interviewing
process. Has anything come of that, now that RJ is taking off?

Val Baldwin, formerly of The Rose, started middays at WIOV a couple of weeks ago.
