WIP ads on KYW

I have been noticing the short 10" ads on KYW recently, telling us if we want more than the scores to tune to 610 WIP.

Cross advertising and promotion has been going on for some time (going back at least to when 101.1 bought ads on KYW), but this move surprises me. While I expect KYW listeners would tune to a music station when they have had their "22 minutes" of news, or switching to 1210, suggesting a move to 610? I am interested to learn if others find this strange or think it makes sense.

They're doing the same thing on Phillies games on WPHT--between-innings promos saying "Hear the games on The Big Talker...talk about the games on Sportsradio 610 WIP." The business-school types call it "creating synergy." Maybe it even works.

That's just dumb and lazy. I can understand them saying something like "Tonite The Phillies take on the Roclies. Gametime 7:05PM Pregame at 6:35 on our sister station 1210 WPHT." But not for more scores tune to 610 WIP. (even if it is their sister station).

Not "more scores," but "more than the scores."

One would think that the better way to promote WIP to Phillies fans is to simply put the games on WIP.

Do you think that it will happen in 2009, WIP being the phillies new flagship station?

No, that makes too much sense! It is too natural of a fit to have a sports talker like WIP actually carry the Phillies, right?

The idea of having your AM talker carry play by play while your sports station talks about it has spread to Boston as well, with the Red Sox mostly being on talker WRKO while venerable sports talk WEEI (the former flagship) only gets to carry Wednesday games. More "synergy" is supposedly created and WRKO's ratings get to be artificially inflated. Much like WIP and WPHT.

I believe I've heard ads on WYSP promoting the sports talk on WIP, along with a spot for WOGL on KYW.

It's a smart move to cross promote their stations. Other companies do it too. I've heard ads for ESPN 950 on WMMR and on BEN-FM.

Well, most times WIP isn't talking about the Phillies. It's probably talking about Eagles minicamp or something else football-related that has no relevance until three months from now.

Are WEEI and WRKO owned by the same company?

It makes a lot of sense. If you have two stations at the top of the ratings list (WOGL and KYW), why not use 'em to promote your other properties? Mentioning WIP on KYW is keeping that one person away from scanning the dial for WPEN.

It's a smart "synergetic" move to do, especially in place of "unsold inventory."

The Phillies won't be on WIP as long as Howard Eskin is there. 950 / ESPN (WPEN) would beg and plead for the chance ... at 25,000 watts in the middle of the dial day and night.

Not a new trick. TV does it too ... Keith Olbermann saying, "Watch the debate ... there ... then come back here to discuss it on MSNBC."

In selling multi-station buys, nothing beat cross-promotion in a cluster.

I don't watch Olbermann, but I'd bet that when he says ... there ... he's talking about a competitor. If the debate were on a co-owned station (like NBC), he'd name it.

It's quite logical from a business standpoint.

1210 has been the familiar address for the Phils for much of a generation now, the short excursion down the dial a blip on the radar. Keeping them there also makes good business sense. Get the fans who want to listen (based on the ratings, there's more of them than talk radio listeners at that hour) and also get the sports talk fans who don't want to listen to the game on your other property.

I've heard him say "there" when it's on Fox. If it's on anyplace else ... he'll say it. LOL!

Hmmm... I thought MSNBC was "the place for politics"... ::)

But "CNN ... is the best political team on television," and Fake Noise is "Television's most experienced political team," and CNBC is ... and Comedy Central is "InDecision 2008," and, um, the Cartoon Network is, and don't forget HBO ... and ...

They were calling themselves "political junkies" or something like that for awhile a few months back. The image of Wolf Blitzer rolling up his sleeve and tapping his arm to prepare a vein was pretty hysterical to me.
