WIP array--missing a tower?

I was driving up I-295 yesterday, past the WIP TX site. Please tell me if my eyes were deceiving me: I thought I only saw one of the two towers in the array standing. Did one fall, or is WIP going non-D? Or, am I losing my mind? I looked on the FCC site, and didn't see any CP info, so maybe it IS my mind ;)

I believe both of WPEN's arrays are in Pennsylvania. Daytime in West Philly, nighttime in East Norriton (the WWDB site). Unless something changed. For years, the WIP site in Bellmawr was a two tower array, with capacitance 'top hats'. I swore I saw only one yesterday.

1. as for WPEN, you are correct

2. as for WIP, i am most certain that both towers remain -- unless it was me seeing double yesterday!

3. while we're at it, don, perhaps you and i should go see an optometrist -- we might get a good deal if we piggyback the appointment!

If WIP were running ND, you ought to be able to tell by the poor reception more than a few miles from the Tx in most directions. The pattern, which is a loose figure eight, puts out the equivalent of something less than 1 kW (actually about 670W) at the minima (to the northeast and southwest). If one tower were out of service (say, for painting, re-guying, or replacement), the station would have to operate at 1 kW or less. The signal would drop off noticeably, especially at the pattern maxima (140 degrees and 320 degrees), so you probably couldn't miss the reduced signal strength if you were listening to the northwest or southeast and were more than seven or eight miles from the transmitter--even if you had a sensitive receiver (car radio, GE Super Radio or the equivalent).

I wonder what Freud would say about some people's fascination with towers.
Actually, I know what Freud would say. ::)

Thanks, Sam and Dan! I figured maybe I missed it! It IS almost eye exam time ;)

As for "Fred," be assured that my 'tower' is good to go, and there are no Freudian connections to my interests. I'm just a radio geek!!
