WIP Changes?

The Philadelphia Daily News reports some "rumored changes", including nighttimer Glen Macnow replacing Steve Martorano alongside Anthony Gargano middays.

No word if this is in response to the recent shakeup at WPEN.

This a move that is LOOONG overdue, Martorano seems bored and tired and Macnow IMO is the best host on that station! Always brings something new to his show.

I think that Ike Reese should be Garganos partner. He's getting better all the time and he brings an athletes insight. He does not always stick up for the athlete, he gives his honest opinion. Mortarano is almost as obnoxious and conceited as Eskin. Macnow may not be as rude as some of the others, but his show and topics are boring most of the time.

Changes are coming, but not in responce to WPEN.

Steve's contract was not re-newed and if they were going to make changes to counter WPEN they would have to be news-worthy moves, wouldnt they?

Giving Ike his own show is a step back IMO. Not that the Locker room on PEN has anything going on over there. The state of sports-radio, night in Philly is bleak.

If I was PEN, I would have gone with Mike Miss vs the midday tandem and kept Jody in the PM slot. Jody was actully pulling some numbers, but now with Miss you could have numbers in two day parts, should be an intererting year.

If I am WIP, I am going to get a younger host to start getting into the mix and its not on their weekend roster, which is pretty bad right now.

They should never have brought Steve back, when Mike was fired. They should have brought someone differant or new in then. I think Jody Mac is better than whatever WIP would put on middays. Whether you like Eskin or not, he still gets good ratings.

Steve and Anthony were number 1 in the book when his contract was up. It was a no brainer to bring him back.

this is good news if true...martorano is not a sports talk host...the average fan knows 10 times more sports than he does, and like someone said, yet, he was almost as arrogant to callers as eskin is. macnow however doesn't do much for me either...he tries to dumb down his sports talk even more than that station usually does, and if he does one more movie-related topic i don't know what the heck i'll do.

There is one place for Phillies coverage and its 1210 Am they promoted there opening day lineup and its interesting Dick Jeradi is part of the team and thats a good move in my opinion

I think many of you are misguided in your views of Martorano. In my opinion, he is the best local talk show talent in this market. His wit and humor are smart. I know some of you guys get scared off by people of intellect, but try to look at the guy objectively. He knows good radio. The guy has been a successful jock and programmer. I wish him all the luck going forward and I'll miss him on the air.

As for his replacement, I'm hearing that Macnow isn't the first choice to replace Steve. They are looking outside of the market. I'm not going to name names, but I think the person they are looking at will be a great fit if the deal can get worked out. He would definitely bring a breath of fresh air to WIP!

This is the time for WIP to move. I love the station, but it's definitely time for new blood. Ex-athletes aren't the answer either. I'm sure Ike Reese is a great guy, but he's not a very good talk-show host. I don't think a Top 10 market is the place for on the job training.

Steve may have been a good programmer and jock, but as a sports talk host he really wasnt that good. You must know him personally, because I very rarely saw any kind of wit from him. He sounded like a know it all, who didnt know much about sports. WIP is not a national show, so bringing in an ex philly athlete, who knows about sports and not just football, and has a personality, would work well here. Philly likes to relate to its hosts, and Ike Reese, who is new at this, does a good job at that. Of course there is need for improvement, but he is no worse than Keith Jones or Hugh Douglas. Knowledge about sports is more important than having the so called wit that Steve had. Even Joe Conklin adds very little to the morning show. Most of the time, his stuff isnt funny and he just says things to hear himself talk. But you are right, they do need new blood here. The station is sounding stale throughout the whole day. You can stay away from the station for several days, and when you come back, nothing seems to be differant. So lets hope they bring someone in who can really help the station and not rely on someone like Macnow to do middays.

as the last poster said, as a jock or a current affairs talk-show guy, sure. he'd be a very good fit on pht. but that's different than being a sports-talk host, and he was just not a good fit when it came to sports. he didn't know basic things every fan knows. i certainly don't rely on 610 as a sports encyclopedia, but i would like the hosts to watch the same events i watch, and with steve i got the impression he was watching the discovery channel instead half the time.

Hey, it sure beats spinning records like that 76er on 100.3 The Beat... ;D

Just got out of my car, tried to listen to Macnow. Couldnt do it. Boring once again. I was hoping it would be interesting, but it was not. Had to keep changing to other stations. Hopefully Anthony can liven up the show when he gets back. WIP better do something quick. I hate to say it, but Ive been listening to WPEN more and more, just to get a variety and something differant.

WPEN is a threat to WIP and quite frankly, WPEN is a better sports station than WIP in my opinion.

Then it sounds like you guys shouldn't be listening to WIP. It's not a straight sports talk station.

I do know Steve, as we worked together at another station in town, but that has nothing to do with my like of him on the air. It's not like we're friends and "hang out'. I don't need him to know every single thing about sports. The fact that he isn't a sports nut is what I love about him. He knew enough to talk about most issues. The thing I really love about his talent is his timing, which is so important in talk radio of any kind. If you coudln't see/hear the wit that he has then obviously much of it was going over your head.

The only athletes turned talk-show hosts that sound good on WIP are Keith Jones and Chris Therien. Reese and Douglas are not good. Hugh is funny at times and I guess is ultimately good at his role with the Morning Show. Reese is definitely getting a lot of coaching because to me he sounds rehearsed. Hey, maybe he'll improve over time. Let's just hope he's not another G. Cobb. G was OK when he was paired with Carton, but solo he's never gotten it in my opinion.

Man, if you don't appreciate Joe Conklin then I don't know if there's much I can say to you. The show hasn't been the same since they let him go when his contract expired a few years back. I think that is when Angelo and crew "jumped the shark". Conklin is one of the BEST at what he does, and not just here in Philadelphia. His talent is ridiculous! He's not on the show enough for me.

The only thing we seem to agree on is that things at the station have gotten a tad stale. I can promise you that if they bring in the person I'm hearing about it will be excellent for the listeners.

I'm not a regular WIP listener now, and have only heard Steve a few times, but found him to be enjoyable, and relatable as a 'casual' fan.

What I really remember though is his time at WIP pre-sports. As the originial weekender in the WIPeople Talk era, and later on his daily show, he was the best talk host the station had, hands down. Able to examine both sides of an issue, and respectful of people who disagreed, all with a great sense of timing and wit. (Precisely the reasons he probably couldn't land a traditional talk slot today in this climate of angry, stick-to-the-party-line-only 'talk.)

Granted, his short-lived stint in mornings at the dawning of the full-time sports format was a fish-out-of-water experience to listen to, but on the night shift and later afternoons, he was excellent.

Heck, he even made WIP's "Desperate & Dateless" fun to listen to when he did it.

I used to be one of Steve's producers. He was one easiest guys to work with. Granted he might not have been the guy that knew a ton about sports but he could direct the show. One of the biggest reasons he was hired was his ability to host a show. WIP is not just sports and think people forget that. Its guy talk. People can complain all they want about Steve being a mister know it all, but lets be honest, some of the callers that call in can drive you bonkers.

Agree! Steve was great on WIP in the pre-sports WIPeople Talk era.

Would this be the Kincade character whose name is being thrown out on the Atlanta board?
