WIP-FM Coming Thursday

I saw a blurb on another radio site that WIP will make the long anticipated move to FM this Thursday, simulcasting on 94.1 FM. Not long after the switch, they will shift the other heritage calls, WYSP, to 610 AM.

Well played, good sir. Well played

Thursday is April Fools day. Careful.

That being said, WIP should move to FM. Based on the last trend, YSP is going nowhere in its current state.

97.5 the Fanataic is getting nowhere. With Eagles, Sixers, and Flyers, WIP-FM would have a huge advantage. Plus it'd be great to hear the station without the typical AM problems..thunderstorms, etc

Nobody seems to get it... YSP is going NOWHERE...they are content with what they are doing....Thursday = April 1st = April Fools day.. let the rumors begin...but dont believe any of them...the Philly market is..."Status Quo", and I dont mean the fantastic group from the late 60's..

Oh I think we get it about WYSP. We just may not all agree the status quo is the right way to go. CBS has put FM Sports Talkers in Boston and Pittsburgh. As big a sports town as Philly is, it's hard to believe they would not make the move here. In spite how well the format is performing on WIP AM.

Here's a thought------ESPN just forced Clear Channel to move ESPN off the weaker signal of 1360 to the 50,000 blowtorch at 1530 in Cincinnati.

What if WIP moved the station now to 94.1 and offered ESPN 610 for full clearance, except for PBP on 610. That would really put the nail in the coffin of Greater Media as far as sports go. Aggressive forward thinking programmers would be making that move now. ESPN would pull off of PEN in a heartbeat to get on 610. Cincinnati proves they want to upgrade whenever possible. At the same time this occurs, launch ESPNPhiladedlphia.com. Sales could have a heyday selling the combo and the web presence. 94.1 WIP would have access to the ESPN analysts.

They already have the PBP rights to all the city's franchises.

WYSP in it's current state is going nowhere.

With 97.5 going nowhere, or close to it at least thus far, WIP already has the advantage even on AM. Whether or not they someday make that swap, at this point, they're not the ones playing catch up in the ratings (on the sports side).

(And do we really need inane April Fool's posts yet again?)

I think the April Fools scenario may be true. I see nothing in the FCC databases about call letter changes for either WIP or WYSP - unless CBS is waiting to the last second to apply.

Seriously, though... I really don't think CBS is going to flip WYSP until Danny Bonaduce reaches his goal of shaking 1,000,000 hands!

The big difference between Boston and Pittsburgh on the one hand, and Philadelphia on the other, is that in Philadelphia, CBS already has a sports talker on the air on AM that is doing well. They haven't moved sports talkers from AM to FM in any market other than Baltimore and Detroit, where the AMers were not getting ratings at all. The other new CBS FM sports stations are in markets were CBS didn't already have a sports station.

As between 97.5 and 610, isn't ESPN on the better signal now?

While FM may be better than AM on paper, in this situation, 97.5 - licensed to Burlington, NJ - has signal issues. Hence why WIP moving to FM would be the nail in the coffin for the Fanatic.

Does it have signal issues worse than 610's signal issues?

CBS is not interested in nailing the Fanatic's coffin. They're interested in maximizing their own profit. Having a music format (even the current one) on 94.1 and a sports format on 610 is going to get them bigger combined profits than having a local sports format on 94.1 and a syndicated sports format (or anything else you can think of) on 610. That's true whether the syndicated sports format competes with another syndicated sports format in town or not.

Perhaps a signal upgrade for 1210 to reach the full potential of its 50KW clear channel license, followed by a format swap between 610 and 1210, would make sense.

"Aggressive forward thinking programmers (would be making that move now)."

Believe me...that term is an oxymoron when it comes to Philadelphia sports radio decision makers.

the last 3 songs on WYSP before the flip would be

patince guns and roses
when the musics over the doors
alive pearl jam

"Alive" would have to be a given, a nod to the demise of WDRE. Although, given the musical direction WYSP leans, I'd expect Pantera's "Cemetery Gates" to be among the last songs played on that station prior to a flip, if not the last song.
