WIPS cracks

Sad day for radio. Another local AM bites the dust.

A sincere and dedicated attempt to save the life of this station finally comes to an end.

Not familiar with that station or market, but I wouldn't be surprised to see more of this, especially if the economy tanks further. Realistically, how many of these small market, weak signal AMs are running in the black? It's one thing if there are a couple of successful FMs in the cluster that can subsidize the AM (and share support staffs), but I don't see a rosy future for standalone AMs, especially daytimers (with or without night-time flea power) or those on graveyard channels.

Re: WIPS could survive

I believe operating WIPS has always been in a tough climate. Growing up on Lake Champlain listening to DJ Bobby Streeter and others they were able to unite a community though understanding Fort Ticonderoga ,the areas Lake George,Lake Champlain boaters, campgrounds, and its summer tourist would support it. With that in mind local merchants advertized.Appearing in moblie units live from the Essex County Fair,Moses Lettington Fund Drive and the Ti Fair all added to its success. Most people I know tuned in for the boaters forecast every hour of the day and just left it on all day while fishing ,swimming etc. The Southern Champlain Valley has a radio market it just needs to be tapped correctly.
As I recall in the 1980 WIPS also operated as an AM / FM station.

Ticonderoga did have a small Top 40 FM station in the 1980s, before it was absorbed by WAMC. 103.9-WXTY began operations in 1980. Presently the station is known as WANC...
