WIP's Sports Update Music

One of the things that makes WIP stand out over other sports radio stations is their unique music bed that plays behind sports updates.

Over the last few years, I've sampled other CBS Radio-run sports stations, including WFNZ in Charlotte, and the new "Fan" in Dallas, both of which use a sports update music bed which is a derivative of the one used for years on New York's WFAN.

I sometimes wonder if CBS has ever considered using this same music bed to replace WIP's current sports update music bed at some point in the future. I then wonder if CBS is well aware that Philly's leading TV source for news, WPVI, has been using the same "Action News" theme for about 40 years, and they decide to stay the course with WIP's current package.

Joe, as far as I can remember, they have used the same music bed for updates since they flipped to sports talk in 1987. It is a derivitive of the "610 WIP" jingle that was famous for decades (moreover, the way the calls are sung).

WFAN recently changed the music bed for updates. I liked the old one better.

Also, IIRC, WFAN's TOH update has no bed. Only the :20 and the :40 have a bed. Unless they changed that recently. Unless they changed it recently, the TOH update was 5 minutes long (including a commercial in the middle), like the network news on a talk station. The :20 and :40 were shorter, maybe 60 or 120 seconds.
