WIQI 101.1 FM (I-101.1)

What's up with the ratings??? Ever since they move the format from Alternative to FM News to 80-90's hits and the current Hot Adult Contemporary format. Their ratings is in the toilet.

It would be a smart move, but Randy Michaels runs Merlin Media, & makes lots of dumb moves. I expect the ratings to go even further down now that the all 90's weekend was eliminated, & the focus lately has been more on newer music, & less 90's. I still expect 97.9 & 101.1 to be sold, & rumors still keep circulating that Cumulus wants the stations, & would tweak 97.9, but go country on 101.1 (if they don't do it on 94.7 first, since the ratings are tanking on that station).

101.1's ratings have always been in the toilet, the frequency is like cursed.

Can Chicago support two country stations on full-market FMs? Perhaps Disney may have interest in 97.9 or 101.1 for ESPN. :)

ABC tried country on 94.7 back in the 90's, & I believe it didn't do too well. If Cumulus does change 94.7 to country, it would be the second time it went country. If anything, they will want 101.1 to be country, if they can buy the station, & keep 94.7 in its current format to compete with 104.3. The only way I could see 2 country stations in Chicago is if one was more of a classic country station. Most stations that do country want to play newer country music over the classics.

Now for ABC/Disney, I thought they were foolish to sell off 94.7 & 890, because both were full market signals. They could have easily put ESPN Radio on 94.7, & 890 for the current format, that Cumulus seems to be slowly gutting for syndicated programming (worse than CC). At least CBS was smart to keep their radio stations in the top 30 markets (they're keeping some markets below #30 that they believe will eventually be top 30 markets later on).

IIRC 101.1 was country briefly back in the 70s. Automated format, I think it was before the failed NBC "NIS" experiment.

It's funny and ironic that news radio was tried on 101.1 and failed twice! Guess Merlin didn't realize a previous failed attempt had already cursed news radio on that frequency. ;)

Actually, Q101 (in the Alternative Rock days) did fairly well through the '90s and into the first half of the '00s. Then, it started to slip away in the ratings.

I don't know if you could call second attempt actually "news". I say that only half-jokingly and with all due respect to a staff that contained a number of talented, worthy, and dedicated individuals.
