Take a look at their Mediabase...asterisks by the WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING? songs. Who the hell is programming over there? Since when does a CHR/Rhythmic play Lifehouse, Green Day, and Fallout Boy?

I give that station 2 or 3 more books max! WIOQ has the momentum back...actually Wired has only beaten Q in the demo in 2 out of 8 books.

Re: Wired in "pod" mode...(tweek).

They are "pod casting" or some sort of BEN type crap for the 12-17 demo. I think it's a "tweek" more than a precursor to a "flip".

Oddly enough, there is a coincidence to all this - the "new" management at Wired also had trouble in this arena once before...with WPHI 103.9. That station went through more "tweeks" in 5 years than any other station without a formal format flip, only to remain a pile of poop. I think they even had No Doubt and Madonna playing on 103.9 WPHI at one time and then went back to hip hop and rap.

So, based on management's track record with an attempt to take on a top 40 format, I don't think chances are looking too good. What they are going to do with adding "rock" is simply reducing their cume which is pumped up by 12-17 urban...last info I got they were almost 60% AA/hispanic 12+.

The white suburban 18-34 audience that they want so bad is not going to stick around for and hour of:

What are you talking about management?? Radio One owns WPHI and Beasley owns WRDW!

I have said this a million times: They're going to go in whatever direction Pop music goes in. It's why they played Kelly Clarkson and Gwen Stefani. The songs were too popular to ignore. Now, it's spreading.

Non-rhythmic songs are becoming too popular in the Pop arena for Wired to ignore. So rather than ignore them, they're mainstreaming the playlist to include them. I predicted this would happen since the day "Wild 96.5" debuted. I don't see what's so unusual about a station adapting to the likes of its target audience. I don't think it's being done out of "panic" either. I think it's being done because they've done some research. And I think it's a pretty good plan.

You're correct. When The Beat signed on, they played No Doubt, Kylie Minogue and Dirty Vegas in addition to the usual hip-hop. It sounded ridiculously out of place with the "street" presentation they were going for.

It doesn't sound quite as out of place on Wired, because they've always had a more CHR presentation, but still... 10 hip-hop/R&B songs in a row and then Fallout Boy? Looking at yes.com, Fallout Boy is in 4 hour rotation now. Why? Sure, some Pop songs do have Rhythmic appeal, like "Listen To Your Heart" did a couple months back, but not Fallout Boy, Lifehouse, and Green Day.

When Wired signed on, they got people's attention by playing hip-hop songs in 1 hour rotations with all sorts of crazy stunts. Might not have been anything groundbreaking, but it was definitely different than what Power and Q were doing. How did that station morph into the "18 in a row" station we have now? They're not going to take Q's audience by sounding just like them, and they're not going to keep the hip-hop audience either.

As a side note, Rhythmic stations flirtations with Pop have always sounded weird in this market. In 1994-95, you had Q102 playing 10 rhythmic songs in a row followed by Green Day's "Basket Case" and the Flaming Lips. In 1998, you had Terry Young talking up "I Love Rock And Roll" and a couple of other weird 80's rock tracks as Q102 transitioned to Pop. Then there was The Beat in '02 and now this.

I can see going in the direction of whatever is popular, but is this song popular currently??

No. But you have to understand how it works: Every station needs something to stick between the currents. Re-currents and Golds have to be researched as well and apparently this one tests well with the demo they're after.

Two Eminem songs in 10 minutes? The Verve Pipe?? For crying out loud, Lifehouse??? What the heck are Beasley and Wired thinking????

Here's hoping Beasley comes to their senses, pulls the plug on this unfocused mess of a station, and gives the area what it really needs - a real Modern Rock station, like 'DRE or Y-100 before it lost direction. Leave the CHR and Rhythmic stuff to all the other stations - no one will miss it.

Wired In "Broaden-The-Demo" Mode?

Well...

Apparently, they're stalled in the growth department and seem to be trying to make something happen by broadening the playlist to attempt to troll for listeners outside the core/P-1's.

I seem to remember hearing somewhere that when a station loses its identity and starts making goofy formatic changes...it's about as effective as rearranging the deck-chairs on the "Titanic".

Iceberg dead ahead, Captain.

I know for a fact that you're smarter than this. I don't believe for one second that you've never seen a station try to shift the format to grab more listeners. And I know that you know that there are people who would miss the station if it went away.

Maybe it'll turn into a rock station and they can move it to Monmouth County? LOL.

Actually, a station that leans older alternative (without delving too much into Classic Alternative) would do good here.

I'm thinking along the lines of KVGS/Las Vegas....an ALT.ROCK station which just REPLACED AN URBAN AC.... www.area108.com

System of a Down - BYOB

on right now.

Now THIS is a departure from the usual Wired sound.

Segued into 50 Cent "Just A Little Bit".
