Wired VS Q-Is it over?

I don't listen to either of these stations on a regular basis, so forgive me if this is old discussion. I sampled both over the weekend at various points though. It seems to me that Wired is more R&B leaning much like Power 99, While Q is almost sounding like a "Party" station like they did around 1998-2000 or so, even playing Remixes for slower tempoed CHR songs. Is the "Fued" over for these two?

I listened to a little of both yesterday while visiting Center City. The two sounded almost identical but with a slight lean with R&B on Wired. Both were VERY repetitive. Not good. My Panasonic AM/FM/CD "Walkman" seem to do a little better with Q-102 within Center City itself.

Regarding the "back in the day" when Q102 was alleged to be "great" (I'm not mocking you, BTW; just quoting you): Was this when they were in direct competition with another station (Eagle 106, for example)? Because during the many years when they were unchallenged, my personal opinion (which of course will differ from that of others) was that they sounded complacent and bland.

I'm not a big fan of Beasley but I am glad Q102 finally got some competition because I expected it to make Clear Channel get on the ball and improve Q102. What I never expected was that Q102 would wobble about as they have since that janitor cracked the mic on something called "Wild 96.5." As such, I also never expected Beasley to make such quick work of Clear Channel's cookie-cutter CHR baby. They made it look easy!

For the record: I enjoy Q102's airstaff much more than the annoying people Wired has on the air. I like Q102's music a bit more than that of Wired because I happen to like the variety of a Mainstream CHR more than that of a station which relies heavily on a particular type of music (in Wired's case, Urban hits). I think songs "sound" better on Wired than they do on Q102...though I'm not sure whether it's the processing or simply the fact that Q102's music is played annoyingly faster than the artists and producers intended.

All that having been said, Q102--even with the better airstaff--kinda sounds to me like they're always on the defensive; trying to play catch-up. That they're still pitching up the music and shrinking their playlist to nearly "Hot Hits" proportions makes me wonder whether they are ready to throw in the towel!

You know what I'd like to see happen? I'd like Clear Channel Philadelphia to give up on the youngsters. Flip WISX to something more adult (Country?) and turn Q102 into a hybrid Rhythmic AC/Hot AC. Without worrying about protecting a CHR, they could concentrate on the 25-54 females and make their entire cluster a lot more listenable!

Just my two cents! ;D

Yes, I was referring to the Q102/Eagle 106 days. The competition made for 2 great stations.
Turning Q into a Rhythmic/Hot AC might sound really cool. Maybe they'd even throw in some old stuff from "back in the day."

Q102 has tried everything they could to beat Wired now they are bringing in Ryan Seacrest. Can he save the station .... I think not. I smell a flip to Hot AC in Jan

Correction:
Q102 has tried everything they could to beat Wired; regardless, the powers that be at CC are bringing in Ryan Seacrest

How about 102.1 Kiss-FM? ;D

i say drop elvis duran and bring back booker Q102s ratings will go back up

and they cant use the kiss-fm name 101.7 in del but that could change

You wanna see Q102's ratings go up? They should bring back Booker and pair him with Larry Mendte. ;D That'd guarantee ratings. For at least a day.

Wired is better than Q, but honestly, i prefer STW and PST for Top-40

Would you keep the "Q102" name? I'd be concerned about people over the age of 24 hearing the name "Q102" and thinking "That kids' station".

Now that is a good question!

I'd be tempted to keep the name and calls for the sake of heritage. But as you point out, that heritage comes with a lot of baggage. I think there'd be other options on the table like tweaking WISX into that hybrid Rhythmic AC/Hot AC and putting a new format on 102.1...but I think the sound WISX has been putting out there for two years might have caused irreparable damage. The demo has tested it and I think WISX has peaked.

Since average listeners don't know that most of the stations in town are owned by Clear Channel, if I were in the position to make these changes, I would probably scrub them both. You're making me come up with a scenario here so I'll let my mind wander...

I'd probably shadowcast the "Hybrid AC" on 102.1 and 106.1. I would like to have some 1980s-style Top 40 imaging (maybe Turbo Z) using the 102.1 frequency. During the shadowcast, I'd have twice-hourly promos telling listeners to set a button for 102.1 and to get ready for something new on 106.1. After a week or two, I'd kill the shadowcast and launch the new format on 106.1. Something geared toward adults. Smooth Jazz maybe.

Just kidding about that last part. But how funny would that be?!

Eh, just use a slogan along the lines of "You've grown up, we've grown up." 8) Just joking.
