Wiregrass DJs from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Where are they now?

With all of the excitement lately in Market 192, I was wondering where some of the past DJs and personalities are today. Some of the ones I remember:

Preston T (WDIG, WTVY-FM)

Chris Bence (WTVY-FM)
Lamar Trammell (WAGF, WDIG, WWNT)

Jeff White (WORJ)
Tim Godwin (WKMX)

I know there are many people I've left out. Please feel free to revise and update these lists with current information. I'd appreciate your help.

Thanks!

Tom

PS I'm also trying to remember if there were any female jocks from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Denise Stanford was at TVY ? I thought she started at WOOF and did news there, then moved on to be a High School Teacher and College Professor.

Here's some more .... "Rod Conners" on KMX real name was Roger went on to Work at DFX Fox 34 and does voice over work for Movie Gallery.

"Bud Fox" On WOOF and a short stint at WIZB when it was Classic Rock. He now works at Ft. Rucker I think.
"Doc Lewis" on KMX was Hal Edwards which he is at WOOF as the GSM.
Robert E. Lee On WOOF in California
Jason Taylor working in Mobile for a Country Station.
Skip Kelley on Q97 is Russell Brooks who now works at WIZB.
Tom Nebel Somewhere in the Panhandle doing Video Production Work after working for Cumulis in FT.Walton.
Connor Vernon from KMX now at WTVY-TV as a Metorologist.

Yes Denise Stanfordwas a news reporter during Roy Fox morning show during middle 1980's. She also worked for WDHN tv as news reporter in 1980's .

I've had the pleasure of working w/ both Al Mason and Larry James during my days @ Clear Channel/Birmingham and got to know Steve Wein via Larry.

Larry just wrapped up a long career in the biz.....including winning CMA Personality of the Year during a stint @ WBT/Charlotte in the late 70's. He reinvented himself as a production and imaging wiz in the 80's and served in that capacity at some legendary stations including WDRM/Huntsville, WIVK/Knoxville, and became the first Creative Services Director @ KPLX/Dallas. He's retired now and living in Columbus, Georgia. A true first class individual!

Steve is the Production Director at KTRS in St. Louis.....the Talk station and Cardinals affiliate owned by Anheuser-Busch.

I've never worked in Dothan before, but I know enough radio folks that have spent time there that I feel like I do :)

Larry James turned me on to this site. I'm one of those "Where are they now" guys. I was "Steve Taylor" at WDIG 1970-75, as well as Program Director there 1973-75 before moving on to Florida radio in Orlando, then Fort Myers. After winning local and regional ADDY Awards there, I decided to get off the air to focus on production while climbing the Major Market ladder first to Dayton, then Cleveland, then Pittsburgh, then Detroit, followed by Chicagoland, and finally to St. Louis, where I'm currently Creative Services Director at KTRS, home of the St. Lous Cardinals.

Others on the staff at WDIG while I was there, besides Larry James, were John Webb, Don Hart, Buddy Scott, Bob Tracy, Jerry Chandler, Al "Howard's Grandburgers" Bartholomew Ferguson's "Heavy Incorporated" all night progressive rock segment......tha's all I remember at this moment off the top of my once hairy head! But there were a lot more contributors to a very creative time in radio.

I have hours and hours of airchecks of WDIG that are still very much fun to listen to.....a time capsule of what once was a very interesting time period in our history.

Steve

I had many great hours listening to WDIG. The studio was about 1/4 mile from my house. Preston T would keep us in stitches. His daughter was at DHS with me. I worked with Don Hart and many other you listed at either WTVY-FM or WOOF.

You got to go back a long way to get the following names from WAGF.

Tommy Underwood
Tom Sabiston
Simon Ritchie
Marvin Edwards
Lamar Trammell
Ed Vaughn
Don McGuire

Remember the OBS? Orange Blossom Special? Started in the 60's by Tommy Underwood using the name Ozell Ledbetter. It was the start of WAGF eventually going all country. Lamar Trammell did the Early Bird Show and billed himself as Mrs. Trammell's ONLY shaver. He played country when country wasn't cool. Anyone remember the 1320 Club hosted by Don McGuire and Ed Vaugh as high school disc jockies? Then it was hosted by Tom Sabiston and Marvin Edwards. 3:30-5:30 every weekday afternoon. Bet you don't remember Dr. Jive on WDIG either? He was on at night and did requests and dedications for the teens. All the stations signed off at 10:00 PM. So, is grandpa OLD? You bet! I remember all of this and much more. One Christmas WAGF ran 47 commercial minutes in an hour of country music they were so so sooooo sold out! Then there was HANGOUT, hosted by Tom Sabiston. He had everyone running around town looking for where they were broadcasting from on Saturday nights 8-10. Those were really really the "Good Ole Days".

Then there was Preseton T, (Truman Duckett) who in addition to working at WOOF and WDIG, did a TV show on WDHN when they first came on the air. He and Tom Sabiston used to be rivals for the Saturday Night teen audience.

Tom Sabiston is retired from broadcasting and living in Panama City, Florida.
Marvin Edwards was recently doing radio in Ozark Alabama, so I heard. Not confirmed.
Ed Vaugh was at one time in Huntsville, working for NASA. That was many years ago, so who knows where he might be today.

WHEN WAGF AIRED THE 47 MINUTES PER HOUR COMMERCIAL TIME IT WAS ON A COMPOSITE WEEK CHECK BY THE FCC. IT ACTUALLY GARNERED AN ARTICLE IN TIME MAGIZINE. THING IS--DON'T THINK THE FCC BOYS EVER EVEN SLAPPED THEM ON THE WRISTS. OWNERS FRED MOSELY AND JULIAN SMITH WERE AROUND A LONG TIME AND LOOKED UPON FAVORABLY BY THE COMMISSION. PEOPLE WHO WORKED THERE AT THE TIME WERE THOSE MENTIONED ABOVE----EARLY BIRD TRAMMEL, NOEL PETERS, MARV EDWARDS, BOBBY PRICE (NOW WITH SCENIC PRODUCTIONS), MICHAEL ADAMS (STILL AROUND TOWN) AND KEN HENDERSON (NOW KEN CURTIS, THE LONGTIME NEWS DIRECTOR OF WDHN.) THERE WAS ALSO A SOLDIER ASSIGNED TO FT. RUCKER NAMED DAVE NASH WHO USED THE NAME LARRY MONROE. HE SOON GOT REASSIGNED AND HASN'T BEEN BACK. HE WAS A MEMBER OF A SIGNING GROUP "THE NASH FAMILY QUARTET" AND HIS BROTHER WAS FIRST TO RECORD "FOR THE GOOD TIMES" WHICH BECAME A MEGA-HIT BY RAY PRICE.

Gosh KW, did realize you were so long in the tooth. Also, you folks forgot "Mit D Wit" on DIG '73-'77(?), better known these days as David (Mit) Kirkland co-owner Scenic Productions since 1992.

who remembers Hot Lips Hoolahan on 96.9? WDJR before it went Country. How 'bout it Stewy???

Hey Darlin'!!!! How that sexy voice holding up these days? Good to hear from you girl! Maybe the most regularly sensual delivery of title and artist I've ever heard. Miss hearing you!
