WIRQ 50th anniversary

Congratulations to WIRQ-FM in Irondequoit. The station celebrated it's 50th year on air this past Friday. The staff and faculty put on a day long celebration welcoming back alumni. 50 years as a student run radio station is amazing! There are commercial stations that don't last that long. Anybody get their start there?

Yup.

I caught the radio bug in '73 watching Tom George work at WBBF while I was up there as a part of a Junior Achievment sponsored high school program. I was attending Eastridge High School in East Irondequoit (Irondequoit High is in WEST Irondequoit), and when I was a senior ('74-'75), I had most of my points and was allowed to leave as early as 10:30 on most days. One day I happened over that way and begged them to teach me stuff. Despite the fact that I didn't go to school there, they welcomed me into their fold. My fondest memory had to be a weekend of programming that cashed in on the popularity of 50's and 60's music that were in vouge thanks to the movie "American Graffiti". We put on an "All-Graffiti Weekend" featuring oldies from the station's well stocked library, and from our own personal collections. The PD at that time was Craig Nowack, who, as I recall, was a HUGE Cat Stevens fan. He, Dave Comisar, Jay Levine, and others whose names don't come to mind right now, took turns doing two hour shifts broadcasting day and night through the weekend. We took requests and even had give-a-ways. We were, quite frankly, shocked at the telephone response.

Some of the best days of my life were spent inside WIRQ.
